18yr old fatally attacked by shark while spear fishing.

Rudder Reef, 40km North East of Port Douglas, QLD.
This week an 18 year old man was bitten by a shark while spearfishing off the QLD coast, later dying from his injuries.

Daniel Smith was spearfishing early this week off Port Douglas, on a well known Reef: ‘Rudder Reef’, 40km north east. The unknown breed of shark attacked in the water, severely injuring Mr Smiths upper thigh, groin and arm before his three mates dragged him back into their boat.

Along the two hour ride home, they performed CPR but due to the large amount of blood lost, Daniel Smith was pronounced dead by paramedics before arrival in Port Douglas. Just graduating high school, Daniel was an avid spearfisherman, and according to friends, died doing what he loved.

Stay safe out there when spearfishing, and remember to always have a phone handy, a good first aid kit and stay current in CPR…
