Fishing store trades computer games for fishing rods.
Bass Pro are calling it the ‘Gone Fishing’ campaign and the whole idea is to encourage kids to put down their controllers, and pick up a fishing rod. While they’re preaching to the choir when it comes to convincing parents that kids should spend more time outside, getting the kids themselves to listen is somewhat more challenging. So, when in doubt, offer free money to children!
What they’re doing is pretty simple, offering trade-in deals on any computer or console game against the purchase of a new fishing rod. It’s just $5, but when you consider that a basic rod might only cost $20 – it’s an incentive none-the-less. Those games are being donated to a good cause (disabled Veterans at Amvets) and it might just lead to a future addict. A Fishing addict that is…
“Fishing offers kids and kids-at-heart the opportunity to put down our devices and experience the outdoors together to bond with our families, connect with nature and get some exercise.” says Stan Lippelman from Bass Pro. One of the marketing guys who came up with the idea.
In addition to the trade-in deal, the 'Gone Fishing' campaign asks one of three things. You can pledge to take someone fishing in the next few weeks. You could simply post a #fishie (which is a selfie with a fish) or attend one of their in-store events. All three good ideas, two of which you can do right here in Australia! Introducing someone to the art of fishing is one of the easiest ways to ensure a positive first fishing experience, because we all know that fishing is always better with a mate!
Would this idea get a teenager you know out of their bedroom? Spread the word to your local tackle shop, or make up your own initiative to spread the stoke of fishing.
