FISHCARE is expanding its volunteer program in the Port Lincoln area and will be holding an information session for interested locals on Tuesday 27 September.

FISHCARE, run through PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture, plays an essential role in educating recreational fishers.

State FISHCARE Volunteer Coordinator, Lena Goncharov, said FISHCARE was looking for people who have a passion for fishing and the local community, to volunteer their time to the program.

“An exciting opportunity exists for passionate fishing enthusiasts to become part of Port Lincoln FISHCARE group, with plans being made for a training course in late October,” Ms Goncharov said.

 “FISHCARE Volunteers are an integral part of the education and awareness initiatives of PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture. They help keep anglers up to date with the rules and regulations that apply to recreational fishing.

“They play a vital role in raising community awareness and helping to spread the sustainable fishing message to protect out fish stocks.

“Volunteers patrol local jetties, boat ramps and other fishing hot spots providing fishers with important advice.

“The volunteers distribute education materials, handy stickers and measuring devices; all aimed at helping recreational fishers get the most out of their fishing experience.

“For some recreational fishers, FISHCARE Volunteers are the only face-to-face contact they may have with PIRSA Fisheries, which is why it is so important we continue to attract and retain more volunteers right across the state.

“If you have a passion for fishing and are looking at giving something back to the community, the FISHCARE Volunteer program could be for you.

Enthusiastic fishers, interested in learning more about the program are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday 27 September at Port Lincoln TAFE (Room 12) on 2 London Street from 7:30 to 8:30pm.
