The sixth annual Crystal Coast Grand Prix in Morehead City welcomed thousands of spectators who gathered on land and water to see the SuperStock USA teams race the Bogue Sound for the first time.
The competition was close during both races but the Miss Madison boat, driven by Kyle Dietzen and throttled by Paul Gallup, took an early lead in rounds six and seven of the SuperStock USA Championship and never looked back.
'We knew how important it was to jump out to an early lead so that was our main focus today,' said Dietzen.
Miss Madison is now the current points leader in the SuperStock USA series and has won two of the first three events (Madison and Morehead City).
Team JD Byrider was the current points leader going into Morehead City after winning in Detroit, but experienced some engine problems before round six and was unable to run the boat. The team worked on the boat between races and got it on the water for round seven but finished fourth place and missed the podium for the first time this season.
Three new P1-28SS Panthers joined the rapidly growing SuperStock USA fleet in Morehead City including team Ocala Gran Prix. The OGP boat is owned and throttled by Jorge DeArellano and driven by John Hansen. The rookie team finished seventh in their first race and improved to fifth in the second race of the day.
Throttleman Jorge DeArellano said, 'It was a great opportunity to see how the boat ran in the rough waters, we made up a lot of distances and got better at approaching the turns. The boat handled beautifully and we were just as competitive as anybody else.'
Morehead City is considered a home event for SuperStock USA located just 90 miles from P1 USA's office in Greenville, N.C. Over 1,000 fans lined the N.C. State Port seawall to sit just 20 feet from the course and feel the spray of the rooster tails coming off the boats. Many fans also watched the race from their own personal watercrafts circling the race course and catching every glimpse of the action.
P1 SuperStock USA's next event is scheduled for San Diego on Sept. 16-18th.
