Island Hopping with Kai Bates
Paddling a tiny little Fanatic shortboard, Kai demonstrates why he's the Aussie man to beat when it comes to technical surfing these days. With plenty of respectable aerials, Keahi-style dishpan top turns and loooooong barrels, the 8 minute clip is chockas full of great paddling, sure to knock your ego back down a few notches! Don't worry, you might surf that well, if you could get out there training with a guy like Kyron Rathbone - things get pretty heated between these two on the water, but their friendship has lead to some unbelievable surfing from the two guys.
In the leadup to Summer, Kai has been doing lots of surfing around Oz with a great result in the Merimbula Classic, winning the open mans surfing division over Andy Davies, and standing in third place at this years National Titles in Currumbin. Amongst all that, he's been a regular at local events, proving that he's not just a man with eyes only for Indonesian beachies, but a do-it-all competitor with an exciting future in the sport!
