SUP Special Olympics - Paddling for Everyone!

The SUP Special Olympics in Florida have been running since 2009, with over 100 competitors of all abilities getting out on the water for some fun racing and friendship thanks to the sport of stand up paddling. This week, the 2016 event was held with enormous success, in perfect conditions off Vanderbilt Beach.

Open to both paddlers with special needs, and those paddlers wishing to support them, there were three races held over the day including a family fun race where anyone was encouraged to grab a board and give it a try. All boards were provided free of charge by the local SUP stores, or many paddlers chose to bring their own.

Stand Up Paddling is an activity that is fast becoming invaluable to those with special needs. Not only is it great fun, but the core workout and health benefits associated with getting out on the water do wonders for those participating. It's not all about racing of course, with stand up paddling groups popping up all over the world for paddlers with special needs, focusing exclusively on casual paddles on flat water.
