The Most Extreme SUP Race Ever - Red Bull Heavy Water
It's a race like we've never seen before, with a month long event window and strict criteria on the conditions it must be run in. Those conditions, 10ft wave faces (or bigger). Starting off the Stand Up World Tour, Red Bull Heavy Water will be hosted in San Francisco from Ocean Beach to St Francis Yacht Club, a 12-15km run depending on conditions.
41 athletes will be paddling, all men, and including seven Aussie paddlers. Those elite seven are names you know all too well - Kelly Margetts, Jayden Jensen, Lincoln Dews, James Casey, Michael Booth, Travis Grant and Jake Jensen. There's 10 from the USA, 9 from Hawaii, and the rest from all over the world.
"I think Red Bull Heavy Water is going to be my favorite event, especially because the course is by far the most intense on this circuit," said Kai Lenny. "The waves here in the Bay Area are huge and consistent. It's going to take a lot of patience to get through this course."
On offer, is the largest cash value ever to be written on a novelty cheque in Stand Up Paddling. $20,000 for the winner, a share of $70,000 in total for the competitors; welcome news after the Stand Up World Tours recent prize money dilemmas.
Sound like something you'd like a watch? You bet, and Red Bull have committed to full live streaming coverage, with commentators and replays ala the WSL, or the other Red Bull big events. It's going to be big, for spectators and the sport of stand up paddling, and it's all going down in September this year.
