Three Month World Record SUP Crossing - Abandoned on day 1

Nic sets off on a two month SUP journey across the Atlantic.
Nicolas Jarossay, a French stand up paddler has spent the last few years planning a feat that would have shocked the world. He was planning on spending the next two months stand up paddling across the Atlantic Ocean, unassisted.

It was a grand dream, and one that most certainly pricked the attention of the worldwide stand up paddling community; but when he set off on the journey of a lifetime, Nic wasn't to know he'd be back on dry land only 24 hours later.

After some issues with his board causing lengthy delays to the trip, the window was closing for Nic and the team before hurricane season. The problem was, his board would not self right after a capsize due to the huge amount of supplies and equipment on board. Although they worked on several solutions which worked to some degree in flat water, a proper solution was never found, proving devastating to the world record SUP attempt.

What happened, was an unforeseen breakage during a storm off Cabo Verde, the starting point for Nicolas' 5000km journey. The rudder cable snapped, sending the board slipping sideways and into a capsize - throwing him off in the process, and leaving him floating in the water on an upturned 21ft ocean going SUP, which was fully loaded with supplies. Righting it was impossible, so the only option Nic had was to call for help, activating his EPIRB and alerting his support boat to come to the rescue. That, they did, finding him after several hours as he began to suffer from hypothermia and some very serious disappointment.

So it was over in 24 hours for Nicolas Jarrosay and his dream to paddle across the Atlantic, setting a world record and wowing the stand up paddling community. Will he be back? Most likely after storm season, with a revised board and even stronger motivation to make it.
