Checking in on 'that village' from the Endless Summer

Surfing in Ghana hasn't become the culture once imagined...
“I’ve always wondered what it’s like at that beach now. Were the locals inspired by getting a taste for surfing? The fantasy was, that they created a thriving surf scene.” Tells Filmmaker Jamie Tierney.

He’s talking about the movie ‘The Endless Summer’, where Mike and Rob travelled to Ghana and filmed the locals reaction to ‘the day white man came with their swimming boards’. So to see, he travelled back there, to the same village in Ghana with a small team and of course some video cameras.

The original surf movie quotes: “These men were so excited about surfing, and we felt sure they’d shape their own surfboard from some jungle tree, and were probably out there surfing it right now.”

Arriving back at the surf town, it was clear times have changed in Ghana, the village was now filled with people, and the beach lay in ruins. Full of garbage, nobody swimming, it was a stark contrast to the packed beach in the movie, with kids playing in the water and beach filled with interested villagers.

But there is some good news, just down the road a small village has developed into a surf town, with a local pro, shop and that classic vibe we’ve all seen in the movie. Best of all, Jamie and his team found one of the originals from the movie, the ‘head rope coiler’ who remembers the day clearly.

Check out the short film below to see his reaction when seeing the movie for the first time, and what he thought about millions of surfers seeing it around the world.
