My neighbours keep 3 dogs locked up in a kennel in the backyard most of the time. These dogs are some kind of working dog breed, so they're going crazy from lack of exercise and stimulation and they bark in bursts all day and sometimes well into the wee hours.
Looking up dog barking collars, I've come across devices that claim to emit high frequency noise when they detect barking and that trains dogs of any age to pipe down.
Any of you lot got experience with the problem? Do the devices work? Would it be easier to feed them rat poison?

When you use the word "dogs" are you uising that exclusively in description of the canines or interchangably for either the canines or your neighbours ?

Just that I'm not too sure how to read the post. I mean I wouldn't suggest you feed the canines rat poison, but....

for a week keep an accurate record/diary of their barking then present to council. Maybe find some other neighbours that share your concern.
No dog owner is going to allow you to place collars on their mutts.

Hey Milk, I had a very similar issue years ago on rural property where the offending dogs were several hundred metres from me.
Unfortunately the owners are sometimes no further evolved than the dog, soooo.
Sounds like you've researched high frequency sound as a deterrent to the barking.
Based on nothing more than theory and trial/error I can advise the following;

The frequency that is effective on one dog may not effect another.
The effective frequency for said dog could be anywhere in the spectrum above 20 kHz.
This is why your off the shelf "birdhouse" sound repeller won't work, the frequency is fixed, don't waste your money, it is possible the dog may hear it but may cause nothing more than curiosity/more barking.

After wasting money, time and sleep on variants of 'ultrasonic sound repellents' I made my own and the results were impressive, after 2-3 days of continuous operation, silence.
Please see photo below.
I really didn't have high expectations for my "dog whisperer" project and to be honest felt like a mad scientist knocking up my contraption.
Please disregard the overall design of my unit as I had to project the sound through the bush to the neighbouring property.
All you need is the ability to change the frequency manually or automatically until you find the frequency most annoying to the dog in question, hundreds of options available as an app on your phone, easy.
Then a means of amplifying the sound to increase its effect on the dog, a very simple manually adjusted unit from Jaycar with a 3.5 mm jack for sound output and some cheap ass speakers, anything will do, you won't hear it.
The iPhones had the 3.5 mm jack then so you need a Bluetooth dongle or similar to connect the speakers.

In less than six pack you should find the sweet spot and neither the dog or the owner is any wiser!
Note, buy two six packs, you'll want to drink the other one if it works

Have you noticed problems such as these tend to occur less in higher socioeconomic areas. Stop being such a cheap ****, sell your house and move to a better suburb

My neighbours' dog barked in the afternoon last week while the were on holiday. They sent a text to apologise, and the contact details of the dog sitter, and offered to kennel the dog for the rest of their holiday.

It would be a lot cheaper to poison the mutts than move house, even after the inevitable heavy fine.
Say I talk the owners into a citronella collar. Do they work?

Can your hose reach the kennel? Set up a solenoid driven valve that operates whenever they bark. They'll figure out to keep quiet soon enough. Even point it at the dogs if you like.

interchangably has 5 syllables.

This post is AI and obviously a scam! The real Carantoc hasn't got the capacity to process words over three syllables.

Yes, they do work. Until the dogs figure out that it has run out of fluid, and then they start barking again... so good to keep it topped up a bit if they bark frequently.

Wouldn't be so sure about that?

You sure it is dogs barking and not just really bad tinnitus or a very severe case of The Hum ?

1. go over to your neighbour with a large shovel.
2. if he/she answers hit them in the face with said shovel.
3. liberate the dogs.

Or complain to the council.
