I have decided to get ducted aircon installed into the mansion. Trouble is that every brand I look up on review sites always has someone not liking them. I guess it makes sense as people are more likely to review something they have a problem with.

That said, has anyone here had ducted aircon installed and had a great experience? It would be good to offset the bad stories with some positive ones.

My fridgie mate says there are only two you ever buy:

Daikin, and if not that, then Daikin.

Other advice here previously was Mitsubishi is NOT the same as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (or was it Mitsubishi Electric?) and one of them is good and the other a bit average.

+1 on the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries stuff (not Mitsubishi)

I have Mitsubishi Heavy Industries ducted air con in a rental unit. It has cocked up. A circuit board ($250 worth) is not replaceable but the whole unit is at $12,000.

Can get 3 split systems installed for $2600 each which is the way I will go. The air con guy said that is what he would do.

I think you have your answer.

I was reading about the idea of installing multiple split systems. The argument is that they are 'more efficient'. I think this is because they can't lose/gain heat in the ducting that a ducted system will. You can even get bulkhead splits that fit into the roof space and vent into the room but are otherwise a normal split system.

I already have one split system in the house but I can't physically fit them easily in the other rooms so I think ducted is the only practical solution for me.

The circuit board problem you mention is a worry, but I think all the manufacturers have problems. You look at the review sites and every brand will have someone that had problems.

I myself had a Fujitsu split installed 3 years ago. I wouldn't get another. The quality doesn't seem as good as it used to be. The cover always had a problem hinging back into place and then broke, which shows pretty poor quality.

I replaced an old non-inverter Carrier aircon with a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries one a few years ago and despite it looking more agricultural, I had no problems with it.

Our Daikin ducted is 20+ years old and still going strong. It came with the house when we bought it.
One thing I would like is better insulation of air ducts - to me it looks like R1 only. Obviously this has nothing to do with the AC unit.

Maybe I read about them on here years ago? I fitted one in my old house, and had one fitted recently to an investment property. They seemed pretty straightforward.

I am pretty sure its the MHI stuff that is pretty good. They argue that AC is about all they do and they do it well.

I know it sounds dumb but one of the things that bugs me is the aircon remotes and you don't know about them until you already own the unit. Some are just stupidly confusing and others are obvious. I am sure I have one where I struggle to make out whether it is heating or cooling because the icons on the remote look ambiguous to me. Even the functionality on some is not obvious. I don't think I have ever been able to set the time and gotten the timers to work on any of them (probably just me).

I do have a Daikin split system in an investment property and it seems pretty old but still reliable.

Don't get the same person to install it who is doing Flysurfer's window.

Unless you want to spend 7 years sporadically talking about it first.

We've installed Daikin full ducted in our last 3 houses. Zero issues over 20yrs.
