Can the people out there that use the Fitbit wristband type gadgets recommend any?
i want to start tracking my cycling sessions. NY resolution that's lasted 2 weeks so far!
Is there one that can gps track the route of kiting / windsurfing also?

if for just cycling, just download strava on your phone and away you go. no need to buy a watch. for water based sports I use my Suunto Ambit 2S, but like said above the Garmins to a top job too.
I take my phone out when I SUP and use strava for it also - depends if you want to risk your phone going in the drink or not I guess
I have used a Garmin Forerunner 305 for 10-12 years, mainly for cycling, but it was originally bought for other stuff. I just got a Velcro strap and strapped it onto the stem. It sat in the perfect position for riding and could never fall off. I would plug it in to charge each night and it would automatically download the day's track log.
I recently retired it because the battery would not hold charge. It works ok but you have to charge it and use it straight away.
I used it a bit for surfing and paddling and kiting. If I get a need for retail therapy I might by one of the new Garmin watches. I quite like the idea of a heart rate monitor that doesn't need a belt.
Garmin watches are ok and from using them in the past for running they are really accurate at tracking distance and speed, but for kiting they are useless at measuring altitude for jumps. Borrowed my girlfriends Forerunner 205 2 weeks ago and pulled the data into the Garmin Connect website. Speed and distance is accurate, but I never really got over about 10m and definitely don't think I hit 20m!
Only thing is if you do look at one for using for kiting, make sure it is waterproof as most of them aren't. Hers turned out to be one of them that isn't and started to fog up inside after a couple of 5 - 10s dunks due to some high speed crashes.
My wife has used a few. The best is Garmin, in whichever flavour fits. As for heart rate unfortunately a chest strap is still the most reliable.
I use a Garmin Forerunner with a HR monitor. Chose it because it's waterproof and as mentioned the garmin connect site is pretty good, provides lots of feedback. I use it for running, cycling and windsurfing
simple unit but useful for my needs
Suunto Ambit 3 sport for me. Had it for 7 months now.
Found it to be spot on for Kite buggying, land sailing and I'm a private pilot. Altitude and ground speed are very reliable.
I'll be honest, I have never used the heart rate monitor belt though.
