It is in the title - PFD 3. Trouble is, in the Australian state of NSW, PFD is an obsolete term (I think...) lifejacket; www.watersafety.nsw.gov.au/Pages/boating-safety/Lifejackets.aspx

Just get a white-water/expedition sea-kayakers lifejacket; more versatile across an array of pursuits I do. And serves as an impact vest.

I bought the same brand but the NEO which is apparently designed for Kiting and Poleys in a bright red unit and my son uses it without fail every session. 14YO on a surfboard reckons its great and doesn't snag and also helps with the harness staying low. I believe they have a 50N rating.

There doesn't appear to be any side impact protection for ribs which I would say is vunurable area for kite surfing.

Why do you say it covers two area? is it marketed as flotation device it doesn't look like it would have much flotation capability.

Friend has one and I tried it on but not in the water.
Size L and larger have side padding complying with international standards and meets NSW regulations for life jackets I am told and this is statef on the web site.
So for me it meets life jacket and impact vest needs.
I have not bought one yet however impressed with my friends vest.
My main liking is way less bulky than a life jacket, provides good freedom for paddling and swimming however a bit bulkier than normal impact vests.

Not being able to swim under lines etc is a hazard in itself

I've been sailing for over 30 years and never felt the need for an impact vest. I don't think I've ever hit the board hard (or even soft) when coming off, I always seem to land in the water or sometimes gently onto the sail. Is there something I'm doing wrong or not aware of?

I have been cracked hard on the skull once by the mast when I didn't get my arms above my head quick enough and was worried I'd black out.

I'm not going to get one until they produce a cocoon model that entirely envelopes the whole body.

Then I'm going to buy a TV and sit inside the cocoon and watch Telly for the rest of my life.

Safely.

Probably not, My worst crashes, are going fast, deep downwind in chop to big for my ability. Spin out,> slide sideways , > front rail trips over chop,> catapult over the front,> land on boom,> snap boom with very sore ribs.
In this situation an impact vest can save months off the water while you recover.

Harrow, I've got an impact vest which I occasionally bring out.

Speed sailing there are days where you just HAVE TO send it knowing that your destruction is imminent, Big sails, small fins charging way of the wind with a barest semblance of control with mental chop waiting at the end of the run is always a recipe for disaster.

Occasional sh1t happens (for some of us more regularly than others) Helmet PFD impact vest are all tools in to keep us upright and on the water

Ah, I guess I don't sail deep enough. I'm just going back and forth on the bay maintaining my position on the beach. I can see the overpowered broad reach being risky.

Guessing you don't want to let go of the boom at Pozo until just before you land, otherwise your board and rig could splash down 500m away.

I've been driving for over 50 yrs and never needed a seat belt or air bag.
It seems however, some people have benefited and are alive to tell their story.
I also surf, boat, kayak, kite foil etc and never needed an impact vest or life jacket.
So Harrow must be right.

Oh also when I was young I never used sun screen - woops - just had a melanoma removed , but for 72 years I never needed to worry.

Getting old does seem to do it.

The closer death gets, the harder you try to push it away.

How can I be "right" when I was asking a question??? Just wondered why many guys here seem to post about getting pummeled semi-regularly, while I haven't even been lightly bruised in 30+ years. The answer seems to be their speed sailing.

I wear a seat belt. Saved me in a 80 kph head on,

Anyway, I'm lucky, all the males in my family have heart attacks at 60. As an added bonus I can't take cholesterol lowering medication due to an adverse (fatal) reaction I have to it, so I'm going to die fit and healthy without ever needing to worry about ageing.

If i dont crash every single session i hate myself for being a useless weak prick and not trying harder or going for something new.

(Not any reflection on you guys you do you)
