A former senior army commander has backed calls for conscription to be added to Britain's arsenal of options to repel a potential Russian attack.

Ex-Army chief joins calls for UK to prepare for conscription if Russia attacks (msn.com)

UK defence secretary Grant Shapps has said that we are "moving from a post-war to a pre-war world",

Looks very like WW3 is not far away perhaps starting with the Russia / Ukraine conflict.

I would only send the pollies and anyone else supporting the need for war.

I don't think it works like that. If someone invades that opinion may change.

War these days is complicated. You get the same old people that want to invade somewhere else, but they then need to keep trading with other parts of the world in order to keep their countries running.

It makes you wonder if people would cut off their trade with countries that start a war, but current experience suggests that it is far more difficult than you would want. So it both limits the chance for war and limits the amount of pressure you can put on countries to avoid war.

How many days did it take you to come up with that profound statement? I have little time for idiots that just want to pitch in a comment at the side without trying to actually add something of value.

Wars are contrived for mostly financial benefit.

The military contractors buy off the politicians and bobs your uncle we have war.

Nothing organic about them.

Predictive programming. Put the memo out and before you know it, it becomes part of the discourse.

Who needs war when the threat of war is enough? Actual war creates all sorts of problems unless you are a dictator.

The threat of war means you get to spend plenty of money on weapons/defence, and none of the actual deaths that would cause you to be voted out.

War is so last century.

I was actually serious. Trump will win the election then talk to his mate Putin to stop the war. Then he will try to change the rules so he can have a third or fourth term.

They want repeated sales so you first need to use the weaponry.

War is last century - i suggest you check out various recent invasions or wars including the Ukraine conflict.

"The few men who remain are terrified

of leaving their homes for fear of being

kidnapped into conscription. Some have resorted

to begging friends to break their legs to avoid service."

There is talk of Western forces being deployed in Ukraine due to the shortage of male adults left of fighting age.

I do wonder if those that support the war in Ukraine would volunteer to join our own armed forces were the call made for volunteers to fight there.

I am also surprised when people support the war in Ukraine. I had a friend that seemed to support Russia. I think he is stupid. It would change your perspective greatly if you were one of the Russian or Ukranian conscripts forced to shoot at others and likely to lose your life, for nothing more than some guy's ego in trying to take over Ukraine.

31000 people have died on the Ukraine side, and any one of them could have been any one of us. And it will achieve nothing except maybe yet another region where the "winner" spends the next 2 decades fighting against resistance fighters.

31,000 people. Losing their lives for nothing.

The population has dropped from nearly 42 million to 33 million depending on who you believe.

There are few men left there to fight with some reports of four to five hundred thousand soul die rs dead.

If the population continues to decline by two to three a million a year the land will soon be free from humans.

So what benefit was gained from those who support the need for war?

Just to check in with reality, you do know who instigated the invasion/war don't you? I don't even think Putin would deny it. He was invading to free the area from 'Nazis'.

I know it sounds obvious to everyone else, but I worry that this war is somehow a conspiracy instead of just a dictator telling his people what he wants them to do.

In a podcast with RFK Jnr some five months ago he cited pentagon estimates that 450k Ukranians and 150k Russians have met their demise.

The war in the Ukraine was the desired result of many years of hard work and distributing of greenbacks by Victoria "F the EU" Nuland and her Neocon bedmates.

Looked part decent back in 2014. Looks like someone has pumped her up now.

Thank heavens you have quoted the information from someone with credentials.

For a while I thought someone would quote some weird individual known to promote conspiracy theories.

Can I get a summary of what the end-game is supposed to be? I have poor comprehension skills and cannot do my own research.

Nobody "supports the war". An invasion happened.

Do you support Russia taking the Ukraine. I definitely do not. But if no one takes a strand it'll happen again and again.

It's easy to have an uncomfortable apathy when it doesn't affect you.

Your answer indicates you support the war without actually saying so.

Various NATO countries are considering sending troops to Ukraine.

If the 31 NATO countries send troops to fight against Russia, then you do realise that WW3 has broken out?

Your hypothetical situation lacks an instigator.
Did all the Russians living in Australia demand to be treated better than Australians?
Did the Australian government then respond by opening fire upon them?
Or did someone crunching numbers at a desk just think"hey, I know, war with Australia will be a good idea"

Edit: also, you're missing the point that NATO would automatically join a war in any member country. That's why Putin was unwilling to defend Palestine, it would have been an instant multinational war because stolen Palestine, or should I say Israel, is a member state.

Look to where funding came from for the devastation unleashed by Lenin and Trotsky. Then you will finally grasp why it is that Russians will never again cede sovereignty.

Our governments have to lie us into every war we are involved in. And they're good at it as the last 100 years show.

Read War is a Racket by Smedley Butler. 1935

Our democracies have excelled since then!
