years back I read about a bloke in South Australia who used a lightweight Suzuki hatch as the donor for an electric car, can't remember what type of electric motor or how it was hooked up to the drive train, or speed controller he used.
But he didn't use conventional batteries - he used big capacitors which took the space of the fuel tank, with some in the engine bay and also hidden behind various panels inside the car.
Apparently it was fast to charge and got a pretty decent range out of it.
