Hopefully someone knows their way around this situation, I am wanting to access UK Chanel 4 in Australia however it will only stream in the UK. Is there a way around this through the use of a VPN or the like?
What is it you want to watch? Plenty of TV programs end up on m4uhd
It's a bit spammy, but it does work.

Pretty sure VPNs are illegal in Australia, so there's absolutely no way around it. You can't subscribe to NordVPN for about $100 a year. Just make sure you turn it off before you do any shopping or banking because your bank's fraud department will pick it up as random foreign access, and freeze your accounts.

What? VPNs are illegal? Where did you learn that nugget from?
Similarly, if what you said is true, my actual bank access from overseas would have resulted in access to my accounts being locked, which is different to 'freezing' your accounts anyway.
To answer the original question though, I used NordVPN to access "free' content on the BBC sites, and from memory it was very spotty at certain times of the day and fine at others. It opens up content that only people in the UK can access normally, but I think the load through the servers was too much to get seamless content.
I wouldn't use NordVPN again though as they have this screwed up sysytem where unless you cancel your subscription at the exact right time, they effectively force you to renew it again for another year or more. To my mind, if you have a good product, you don't need to conn people into renewing by stealth.
I have been thinking about the same thing, in my case Kayo is so bad that it is unwatchable for anything that is popular, in my case AFL. My brother in law in NZ can watch live and free on the net there. My wife is an Essenden supporter and there are very few Esssenden games on TV here in WA.

If you have a relative overseas, maybe check out Slingbox or similar solution. It's basically a digital set top box, that can be accessed over the internet. Slingbox used to be popular in 2000's, I think mainly in the USA for watching college sports. I never used it, but it was popular with US expats working in WA back then.
quick google tells me that Slingbox is now discontinued but there are still units available on Amazon, recent discussions on reddit as well as links to similar solutions. So YMMV but maybe worth looking into?
Another option would be Plex server, assuming the TV chanels you are intrested is supported: www.plex.tv/en-au/tv/
I think you would need to set up a Plex server at your relatives home, and that may involve a bit of tinkering to get it right
