Slowly I'm beginning to think that foil race boards in general by design are extremely poor at allowing lateral control.
I have found the ride much more controllable in general but in particular when your on the edge - with my front foot on the windward rail, and my back toes off the other rail, allowing much easier balancing, to the point where downwind the rearfoot is out of the straps and sitting on the toeside rail.
Has anyone else found this to be the case.... or finds it easier to use exactly the same foil setup on a wider board?
I've never tried a race board. I use a 110 pocket board and find it great. Looking at race boards though, they are a purpose built piece of equipment. They are narrow and chined to allow maximum canting when beating upwind. This is great for racers obviously, but for my type of strapless free-riding on a larger wing, I'd imagine it would be a lot less fun than a shorter wider board with less swing weight.
If you're not going over 25kts regularly and you're not jumping then strapless pocket boards are where it's at. I find there's almost no wrong place to put your feet. Once you go pocket you'll never go back
I've put my race foil on a 120X48 Groove Skate copy, easier to transition than the narrower race style board. I notice catching a rail upwind but if your not racing it isn't really a problem. The 110cm mast still allows canting over enough for upwind but just seems more friendly to ride. I just use the two front straps.
