I'm trying to plan a kitesurfing vacation for next week. I live in Wellington, and I prefer a location not too far, say, up to ~4hr flight. So far, I considered Nelson, Tauranga, and Kilda in Melbourne. Do you have a quick tip for a kitesurfing "paradise" that I should look into?
I'm always a fan of Tauranga, as I learnt to windsurf and later kite there. Good locations in most directions other than a direct southerly. Haven't kited St Kilda, but looked great every time I was there. Have you thought about Raro as it's only slightly further than Oz .
If you are coming just to kite I would go to Sandy Point (2.5 hours from Melbourne). Amazing conditions and higher likelihood of wind. Even better would be flying into Melbourne, hiring a car and moving around based on the forecast. Lots of great spots, better than St Kilda and much more room on the water.

Nah, if you really want some kiting, keep flying to WA. I'm not sure about the NZ destinations, but WA will usually have the wind.
Zohar you've obviously missed Cauncy's posts (Not Sure How You Could :( ) on how good the wind is in Geraldton/Dongara WA????
But that's a big trip from Wellington. Stradbroke Island is pretty cool but i've never kited there. What about Taranaki???? You cant go wrong with Tauranga & Mount Maunganui
Auckland and Northland OK, can go from one coast to the other in a matter of an hour or 2. Lots of deserted beaches, great if you have a mode of transport and are willing to go off the beaten path

Direct flights Auckland to Perth 3 times a week, just sayin...
I'd rather sit on a plane for an extra few hrs than sit on a beach with no wind, it's been an amazing season this year wind wise here, no sign of it stopping, shark bay cranks and great fishing options
.. and they don't call Geraldton the Spain of the South for nothing
Wtf???
Please explain
Wrong time of the year for wind in the naki. It turns all fickle and weird directions this time of year.
