Anyone tried the ozone 4m uno lei trainer kite on as a high wind HF engine?

OR Storm would be far better...designed for actually riding in high wind, not training. Lotsa depower apparently too. And I think they're really cheap, even new.

Not sure about the storm. might be too heavy will all those struts and extra protection. I have 7 rebel which has a heavy beast and awesome for bump and jump in 30 knots on the mutant. But it really sucks balls on the hf when i want to run with the swell. Its way to heavy with ****ty drift.

Thus im thinking 1 strut kite, super light might actually be the go for 25-30 knots wave riding on the hf. drift it, loop it stall turn it.....

Storm is supposed to be fine for wave riding too, but at 30knots an umbrella will drift. Only weight I could find said 5lbs so who knows...

You want a Cloud, you do ;)

4m uno would work a treat for foiling in high winds. Just pump it hard. I rigged a 3m Ikon single strut kite in 20 knots it worked a treat for foiling. With a 4m uno I reckon you'd get going easy in 20 knots + especially given your flying skills

I don't know how to get the vid out from Facebook but if you search kitefoil.nl 2.5m there was a vid assisted a few days ago with a guy absolutely ripping on a 2.5m kite. Very skilled rider though, clearly, flips his go pro for tacks etc. Worth a watch.

BRM Cloud is designing a new model of kites that will be sizes 2.8, 3.7, 4.8, 6.2, 8.0, 10.4, 13.4. So you can get a 2.8m or 3.7m kite purposely built for foiling in 2 months or so.

Clouds are out of my price range. Uno is almost half the price.

In 2 months when the new version of the brm kites come out you can perhaps find a second hand 3.5m brm cloud instead then

The dude is running a Zeeko Carver wing and this will certainly assist flying with such a small kite.

Yeah that's it thanks Plummet. Hard to post from phones sometimes.

bigtone: Agreed.. I reckon the cold dense wind would be helping too (check the gloves etc..) Plus he's pretty skilled with throwing the quick loops to keep it powered up. Some of them are insanely fast.

OMFG! That was some of the most inspirational foil riding kite control I have yet seen!! That little kite is insanely fast and fun. Hah, the money spent on a quality carbon foil is easily offset by the cost of a small inexpensive kite. Thanks for posting that video.

That flying style is almost identical to how you fly in the kite buggy. Small kites loop the hell out of them and build aparent wind an speed through working the kite. Because you are running underpowered compared to normal kite surfing you can easily loop right through the powerzone. Particularly running broad reach.
I've been flying like that for years and years on the land. I'm flying the same style on the hf in lighter winds on the 6m and 8m, albeit with bigger slow loops than this guy.

Side note. If he did a figure 8 loop he wouldn't need to untwist the lines.

I wonder what wind he is kiting in. Does anyone understand what he is saying in the vid?

Yeah i recon a cloud would be the business. But even a second hand one will still be expensive compared to the uno. I see nothing s/h in nz which would mean importing a s/h one sight unseen from somewhere around the world. Freight only would add another $100nzd.

Yes, the cloud kites aren't as cheap but after flying a friend's 5.5 I'm thinking I'll start building a quiver of BRM clouds for moderate to high wind use with my zeeko spitfire. the 5.5 is smaller packed than a compressed sleeping bag , so the 3.5m shipping wouldn't cost much in international post at 1.3kg packed. The new model comes out in April so I'd expect second hand 3.5m to be more common after that.

Not that it matters, but it looks like he's rigged the lines oppposite to normal (red on the left, and black on the right).

Ok, First go on the 4m uno. 15-25 knots wind mainly above 20 knots.
I was perfectly powered on the 6 reo so thought it a good time to try the low end of the 4.

How did it go? similar to the video above to be fair. The 4m is loops bigger and slower than the 2.5m in the video. Its less back stally and pivot turny too with my bar set up.

Over all I had a ball looping the hell out of the kite to get out of the water and on the foil. Once on the foil I could loop at any time anywhere in the window to shut off the power and run with the swell or pivot loop with the swell. Running with the swell in the 15 knot lulls was more difficult than my 6m. But in the 20-25 knots it was sweet and lush. I could have power when needed or shut it down. Perfect for waves.

As i'm still not perfect on my jybes I need kite power to hold me up and pull me through the jybe. So in the 15 knot lulls I couldn't jybe without loosing speed. That's just my lack of skill.

My conclusion is that its a worthy purchase and will be pulled out of the bag for when gusts hit past 25+ knots.

PS. Its 40% cheaper than a reo or endura too.... win, win. Oh for ****s and giggles I check out the 5m switch element price against the uno. Sorry Switch too expensive...

Yeha. Its good when an evil plan comes together.

I purchased one a little while ago but have not had enough time to settle in the the 4 Uno. It was low to mid 20 knots, and out of the bag there was so much slack line I had to put it down and tie a bunch of knots. Still could have used another knot still but it flew fine, fun to loop, and so in control. I have since tuned the bridle so next time it gets over 20 I will be on it. I think it will be a pretty good foil kite in the right conditions.
Saying that, the new D model from BRM looks very sweet.

The 3.5m C.5 is a lot of fun in 30 knots on the zeeko. It is so fast, you have enough time to completely turn around before kite and still swing it into the wind window.

Mad drift on all of them.

Alas, Brm is out of my price range. So the uno will do for me. It loops and drifts well enough for me.

I just had my first go on my new 5m Boost 2 on Sunday. Wasn't that windy - above 20knots and it's been 8 weeks since I last got out but man I love small kites. I had the cloud 3.5 and 5.5 and have sold them both recently via the buy sell section. Great kites but just didn't suit me at the end of the day. The sheeting on the bar was way to finicky - I found I was constantly oversheeting the 3.5 or getting dropped on my ass last few sessions - just an inch or so of sweet spot, which my ham fisted skills were too clumsy to work with. Mind you, I was also riding the Zeeko spitfire for the first time and that was overcomplicating things as I didn't have a clue about the setup and was crashing loads anyways.

I've been riding christians Ikon 5m single strut in summer and loved it - especially with 35m lines in lighter wind. Give looong lines a go with the Uno if you can - you'll be amazed at how small a kite you can get away with. I'd love to try the Uno in the right wind too. Just amazing how well they work with the foil......

I love to fly small kites too..... its pretty cool looping the **** out of them anywhere in the window. Its also cool to be doing a bit of stunt style flying while your riding a foil at the same time..... I recon 15 knot low end is low enough for the 4m! Its madness. But 25 + will be where it shines.

On a side note. I also like to jump and running underpowered on a 4 or even full powered on a 4m wont equal boosting!... ... .. . . .

So my high wind sessions will be decided by the boostability of the water conditions! Good for boosting? flag the foil, mutant up and boooost. If ****ty for boostage. Get out the teny tiny kites and loop like crazy.
