Hey all, I have a few questions on the local snow kite season here in NSW. I've read all the forums and know where all the spots are, how to get to them etc etc.
I am wondering what everyone uses for their wind forecasts on top of the snowies? Obviously seabreeze as its name suggests involves being close to the sea in some manner, and this therefore poses a problem with wind forecasts in the mountains.
Also is the wind as terrible as I've been led to believe? I was going to take low depower c kites this year (10 or 14m), and just ride on the free ride settings, but is it worth buying a foil kite? I know I've probably opened a can of worms with that topic, but you can fight it all out.
On the wind factor, is there a "usual" direction the wind comes from? I was crossing my fingers that there is a consistent direction the wind blows from, but am not holding my breath.
Finally, what is the usual time of the year that people start heading up there?
I'll be keeping an eye on the kosi kiters group so if anyone is heading up to thredbo this year for a burn, i'll be keen to jump on the wagon.
Cheers in advance,
Dave
Hey Dave, Martin Brown and Patrick Spiers on the Kosi Kiters group will be able to answer with more details, but I'd say the snow at the top is usually good from mid July till mid/late September.
I wouldn't buy a snow specific foil kite unless you're going to spend days and days up there, you can already have a lot of fun with your current water kites. That said they do make life easier with no pump to carry and ease to selflaunch and land. As you've read the wind is tricky, most of the time either nuking or non existent. And always very gusty because of the geography obviously. So if you've got one a wave kite does wonder in the snow as they're very stable and able to drift when you go downhill and they usually have a lot of depower.
I think your best bet for a reliable forecast is crossing data from the BOM and Willyweather. From memory the most common direction is south-west.
Hope this helps!
Can't wait for the snow to arrive, see you up there!
