Hi guys,

currently ride HB Anti 5'4 but want a second board for lighter wind. Anti is good for me from 15knots onwards (80kgs). I still have North Nugget 2013 but although it planes really early, it is equally slow =( I was wondering if the Vanguard 5'6 would be good fit for my needs ie. the board should be light, fast and early planing (from 10-11 knots) - but is it those three things?

Feedback appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi OMG, I had the 5'2 VG & a 5'0 2013 Nugget - I now have a 5'3 Vader & 5'2 2015 Nugget (73kg).
Even though mine was only a 5'2, in my opinion the Vanguard is not a great light wind design because it has too much rocker & pushes water at low speed but once it gets to about 15 knots is great fun.
The 2013 Nug was a great light wind board but I know what you mean by it being slow, the 2014/15 Nug is much quicker - holds a rail better & goes up wind just as good.
If you want to start in 10-11, the Nuggets hard to beat.

... toppleover is spot on!

I currently own a 2015 5'5" Nugget and a 2015 5'6" Whip (the Vanguard style board) and ridden the older 2013 Nugget for a month so reasonably familiar with them.

The old nugget is a great lightwind board but as mentioned, reaches its top end pretty quickly becoming bouncy when powered. The newer Nugget had definitely a better top end and can handle being well powered but is bouncy when really choppy especially in the 20 + knots but still lots of fun.

The Whip needs a tad more wind than the Nuggets but but eats chop like a demon! Handles rough choppy water with ease and not quite as good upwind as the nuggets but still very good. The whip is also more sensitive to back foot placement. I used the straps a few times but always found the back foot was always in the wrong spot so I took it off, leaving the front one and much better. I can still ride fast like I'm strapped but have the back foot manoeuvrability of un-strapped board.

I have a 5'4" Vanguard, can go upwind on it as low as 15 knots/12m (I'm 6' 85kg) also have a 6' vanguard, bigger boards will float better allowing for earlier planing but create more drag so you are going to go slow anyway so you need a foil or raceboard if you want to go fast.
