I'm sailing over to KI next month and hoping to get some kiting in, preferably close to American River.

I'm looking for shallow-ish, flat-water spots.

I hear that Brownlow Beach near Kingscote is great for NE through S winds.

Red Cliffs (Western Cove) looks good for winds with any northerly aspect, or for doing a downwinder to Brownlow Beach on a southerly.

Strawbridge Point, the large sand pit at the mouth of American River, looks promising too. Anyone kite there?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey mate,

You're right on the money, Kingscote is the only option for anything that doesn't have north in it. I've kited there, out from the sailing club and its alright. Also kited Island Beach (American River) in a northerly which was great. If you get northerly's of any great strength all the anchorages on the north coast are no good (uncomfortable or dangerous if really howling) except American River (And Penneshaw of course), so you will probably end up back that way.
To be honest it can be very frustrating there because the winds often cranking from the south, especially in Nov. Great for sailing and anchorages, **** for kiting. If its cranking from the north, your skipper will probably be trying to seek shelter and you'll be begging to get the kite out haha.

Good luck

Thanks muirs. As the skipper and the kiter, looks like I'm going to be conflicted

On a Northerly I think I would anchor inside American River, then take the dinghy around to Island Beach with the kite gear.

Nice one mate, make sure you put some photos up!

Done much cruising around SA?

My profile pic is from a cruise I did a few years ago around Sir Joseph Banks Group. Bloody good times.

Hiring a Cat in New Caledonia over new years and doing a bareboat charter. Can't wait...

Hey guys, are there any other spots in a SE to SW? As this tends to be the predominant wind on KI. On the south coast? Like D'estrees Bay or Vivonne Bay? Cheers

Anything south facing that's not too mental in the swell and rocks department. Had plenty of fun kites on Vivonne. Don't drop your kite though ;)
