Preliminary notice - Sunday 10th of January 2021
The forecast for this weekend combined with a bushfire closing Indian Ocean Drive is a challenge to say the least. Our thoughts go out to all those affected and the firefighters. The forecast shows a trough on the coast and 35 degrees on Saturday, and an expectation that the trough will move inland, bringing SW winds for Sunday. This doesn't help the swell much, but the forecast is for a 1.5m swell with a 14 second period for Sunday. On the bushfire, the DFES site current shows that Indian Ocean Drive is closed. At this stage we are hoping to run a one day event on Sunday 10th of January. We will make a final call on Thursday night at around 5pm. The final call will be based on the forecast holding up and Indian Ocean Drive being open. Fingers crossed. Remember that spaces are limited and you must register online by Friday night - we won't be taking extra registrations on the day. The competition format, heat draw and heat times will be finalised on Saturday. To compete you need to be a current KWA member, so get your membership now if you haven't already. Here's some information on the comp format, judging guidelines and other matters to help you prepare.
Divisions Divisions are amateurs, juniors, womens, open, masters, legends. Divisions are consistent with Surfing Australia divisions.
Competition Format It looks like being a one day event. The comp format and heat sizes depend on number of competitors and the hours of wind forecasted for the day. We will finalise start times on the day - it will be as early as is possible. You should plan to be at the comp site by 9 am so you don't miss your first heat. The final comp format, heat draw and heat times will be available at the beach on the day. We aim to give competitors as many chances to compete and progress as possible for the conditions on the day.
Judging Guidelines The judges will be instructed to score heats as follows:
A surfer must perform radical controlled manoeuvres in the most critical sections of a wave with power, speed and flow to maximise scoring potential.
Innovative and progressive surfing as well as a variety of repertoire (manoeuvres) will be taken into consideration when rewarding points for waves ridden. The surfer who executes this criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves shall be rewarded with the higher scores.
Bad WavePoor WaveAverage WaveGood WaveExcellent Wave0.1 to 1.92.0 to 3.94.0 to 5.96.0 to 7.98.0 to 10.0
To facilitate this, surfers will be judged on their 2 best scoring waves. This allows riders to lock in two solid scoring waves, then attempt high risk manoeuvres in the time remaining in the heat. In practice, judges will be looking for high performance surfing. They will be looking for big moves in the best part of the wave, rather than a consistent effort on a wave and through the heat. As a guide - look to the best guys in the latest magazines and movies - if you can do what they do - you will score highest.
Amateurs Division The amateur division is about getting onboard and competing, its a great division for a range of reasons. The judges are still looking for someone trying to surf the wave- being in the pocket, how many turns you can do, how vert you can get. But it doesn't matter how you get there - twin tip or a surfboard, strapped or unstrapped, hooked or unhooked - what matters is giving it a go and having some fun - that's the judging criteria.
Right of way A surfer deemed to have the initial inside position on a wave has unconditional right of way for the entire duration of that ride. Any surfer that catches the same wave as the rider with right of way may pull off without penalty. To incur an interference penalty a rider must "hinder the scoring potential" of the surfer with right of way. Remember, "hindering the scoring potential" includes on the way out.
Wedge Island The comp is at Wedge Island. We will choose the exact location on the day, looking for the best banks for the conditions. Look for the KWA & Cabrinha tents and flags. That's all for NOW, So get your entries in, let's hope the forecast Improves for both the competition and control of the fires.
State Waves RE-SCHEDULED!!
Due to the evolving bushfire situation at Wedge Island and Lancelin we have had No choice but to re-schedule the event this weekend in the interest of everyone's safety!!
We plan to hold the event the following Saturday, 16th of January with Sunday the 17th as a back-up date. We will assess the situation over the coming week and make a judgement based on the fire situation and forecast.
Unfortunately there is nothing we can do in this situation. We have tried our best to run the event however it is out of our control.
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the fire and a Big Thank You to all the Emergency Services. Stay Safe.
Yes we are aware of the clash of dates with the two events.
That is why we originally moved the state waves to the 9th & 10th to avoid a clash.
Unfortunately due to the fires we have had to re-schedule to our first back-up date of the 16 & 17th.
Long range forecast isn't looking promising atm but we will keep everyone posted and give you an update Wednesday 6pm.
State Waves Re-Scheduled
Due to the lack of necessary wind & waves forecast we have been forced to re-schedule the state waves to our 2nd back-up date of Saturday the 30th of January with the 31st being an additional back-up date.
Due to the original event date being re-scheduled due to the bush fires we are looking at possibly adding another back-up date in the second half of February if the event doesn't run in the final weekend of January.
