Hi Has anyone done Leighton/land to Rottnest and back? Sounds like a great challenge, any tips/advise would be much appreciated . I have just purchased a compact and waterproof PLB, but can anyone recommend a suitable offshore flare kit to comply with the latest rules?
Planning on doing this challenge later this month with a friend if anyone is interested.
Lads do it quite a few times each year in recent seasons. Plan for the worst!! if you snap a line is you first option to set off a flare/plb?
Better would be going as a group so that somebody could tow you. Best is get a few crew together and a skipper and do it with a support boat. Bobab boat hire do a good rate.
please for the love of god have a support boat . While the distance is not that great , if something does go wrong you are in an area with large ships who will prob not be able to see you . If something does go wrong 10km out are you just going to pop your plb and expect an expensive search to come ferry you back home ?
By all means do it but make sure you have taken all steps to make sure it's a safe but fun voyage
Thanks for your reply. Flares and PLB would be a last resort if self rescue was not possible. Agree boat cover would be best and something i will look into if i can get a few more people interested.

really if something did go wrong 10km offshore and you popped your plb, do you understand the costs involved in FSR coming to your aid . Don't attempt this unless you have a support boat .
The more safety the lesser the challenge, if you've safety back up , support boat , mates, then there goes the challenge, you may as well slap a gps on and do some distance, if your confident in your ability and equipment then go for it, if your not then plan for a rescue
Thanks Joe, yes I think it will be a cool challenge with risks associated as any challenge does. We certainly would not attempt it unless we were fully confident in ourself and equipment and understood the risks. It is just getting the balance right with taking the correct safety equipment and planning a suitable level of 3rd party cover without spoiling the challenge. Or I might as well get the ferry over and kite a Salmon bay (which is also great, just not a challenge).

i'll provide a support boat, you pay the fuel . But you will need to make sure you do have the right equipment with you because if you were pulled up or something did go wrong and you didn't have the required safety gear you would be fined .
but hey i reckon do it by all means :)
PLB, Daytime Flares and an epirb + support boat and an Engel full of cold beers for when you finish.
I'm keen
Sounds like a challenge, flares, PLB/EPIRB, buoyancy vest, water and a rock-solid buddy system. Work out your worst case scenarios beforehand and have a plan for them.
If you're not organised but are going anyway at least take the PLB/ EPIRB. If a marine search is started the preliminary search area could be anywhere from Rottnest to Yanchep, so if it goes to poo just set off your EPIRB and save everyone the hassle and expense of a search, 400 square kilometres down to a few hundred square metres and everyone is home safe before dark.
Hi Dusta Thank you for your very kind offer that would be awesome. I will touch base with you later in the month to discuss fine details and your availability based on the weather forecast. I was thinking the last weekend of February if any one else is interested. Cheers Daz
Almost did it a few years ago (mate even organised a support boat) but the wind didnt play ball. Just do the l2l once and youll realise its a waste of ****ing time. Slap slap slap slap slap etc.
