Asking for a mate, looking for a cruiser/racer
70k budget
under 12mtr
Lots of racing, mainly in the Moreton Bay, maybe a B2G or Surf to city as well
Also some local cruising with a young family mostly again in Moreton Bay or GC
Any designs/makes come to mind to look out for to buy and also to avoid
Not sure why this hasn't sold by now - imho it is all round class.

Two good NS38s the 2nd stretching the budget

This is more racer than cruiser and over the budget but everything is negotiable.

I have nothing to do with any of the above yachts. Of course a trial sail and out of water survey by a suitably experienced person also acceptable to the planned insurance company would be mandatory.

Something for $35k.
Seriously, new rigging, motor overhaul (not rebuild)
If racing keel inspection, safety equipment for AS bull****.
bottom job as well if racing, rudder bearing job.
And that is before sails

Yes I understand that well
I think since buying my bought my boat I have spent 50K on rigging, electronics, electrical, bottom jobs, upholstery, canvas, sails, anchor etc and still got a list of stuff I want to update or replace.

Having bought a race boat for the same intended use case in the last 12 months on a similar budget nothing I have experienced yet contradicts this advice.
You(r mate) need to understand and decide whether they want to be able to do over 10 knots in the right conditions. If it's not a factor you can look at an IOR era boat and get a better deal and probably a better cruiser (just buy and S&S and keep the forum happy).
If I went again I'd bargain hard on a Sydney 36/38 so as to get a production hull.

I think a Sydney 36/38 is just a bit above budget, what are the forum thoughts on a Farr11.6
Whats the advantage of a production hull, if it was for me I would be looking for a custom hull made from epoxy and strip plank. I was interested in buying Belle, a well known racer turned cruiser. Shes up for sale again, I like her, she would have been perfect for the last few years but I knew she wouldn't serve my long term plans well. Belle isn't an option though as 70K won't buy her.

That boat's listing at 120K? You would get a race-ready Sydney 38 for 120K.
Lydia's point still stands. Is 70K the boat-ownership budget (first year) or just the buying budget and there's another 30K for the needful?
The benefit of a production boat - that Farr 11.6 is a good example - is that it's easier to trace the provenance and the paperwork. When I was shopping, Farr in the USA had details of modifications to specific Binks models, inc stability etc and offered me the plans (for a fee).
Is the Jarkan 38 with the carbon rig still around for sale
just googled it - sold
looks pretty nice, I will send him the link even though it's sold, just as a comparison

Could just have it raised. Trimming a main isn't too bad either. Mine is low but never in the way while sailing and stowed to port at rest so never bothered changing it.

You could of course take a different approach and do a yachtshare. A good mate has part of the Oceanis 45 and it's the weirdest feeling just rocking up, casting lines and going sailing. Fixed maintenance cost, cheap entry for what you get in return. Yachshare do a good job in looking after the boats.

Yep, S&S39 for me. You will get a very good one for $70K.

I'd buy this one, except I am over owning a yacht because like you I have been off to other adventures.

Is it a fact that the boom on this one is "too low" or it just seems that way due to the high dodger? Assume you can get the sailplan dwg on line and ask for the height from underside of boom to top of deck at the mast step and compare? Others on here with NS38 could advise? The boom height at the mast seems "normal" to me.

Sorry, don't know about that particular boat. The boom on the NS38 I looked at was chest height on me in the cockpit.
