I am currently touring the Tasmania east coast in our old Triumph sports car. That is not relevant to a sailing forum but explains why I am here.
The east coast is really beautiful as is the Tamar River area. I can see a future cruise down here, maybe for a Hobart Wooden Boat Festival (I know the S&S34 doesn't really qualify but is a suitable vehicle to get there in).
Crystal clear water, nice little towns with good anchorages, great scenery. The water is decidedly cool (bloody cold really) but it is a minor compromise and might be a bit warmer in January/February.

Hi Don, sort of. We head to Port Arthur tomorrow then Hobart on Thursday. Stay in Hobart Thur, Fri and Sat nights at Wrest Pt then move over to the west coast on Sunday.
We are with the TR Register car club and have about 45 Triumph TR2, 3 and 3A and one or two Swallow Dorettis (very pretty little cars, google it.
I doubt we will have time to get all the way down south but if I do, a few of us are sailors, I will let you know. If you want to see the cars a lot of us will be parked on the Parliament House lawns on Saturday, with some Italian clubs.

Ill pm you my mobile. Cheers John

You have not cruised until you have been to the West coast in winter.
Cannot be described.
Harden up petal!

BTW best months for cruising in Tasmania are Feb to May.
August to January the worst.

The water is too cold for it to be heaven. Close maybe but not close enough!

Water is not actually too bad, still good for swimming well after Easter.
Boat with a good shed helps though even in December.

Same mountain as the pic above in September.
Like I said you just need a shed!

Hi John

It sounds like you will be having a good time

Unfortunately we wont be able to make it up to Hobart on Saturday to look at the cars as we have the first of our long distance races that day

When you head up the west coast if you have time call in to The Wall in the Wilderness at Derwent Bridge

thewalltasmania.com.au/.

It is amazing

Also the meals at the servo at Derwent Bridge are pretty good from memory as well

It is a public holiday for the southern half of the state on Thursday for Hobart Show Day so be aware some of the shops will be closed

If you or any other forum members do get a chance to come for a drive down this way a good drive would be to follow the Huon Highway to the Esperance Coast Road turnoff (at Surges Bay) and then follow the Esperance Coast Road to Dover and then join the Huon Highway and turn right to head back north again or turn left to head further south

The Huon Highway (from Huonville south) and Esperance Coast Road runs along the hills and banks of the Huon River at it's lower reaches and the scenery is nice with great views over the Huon and the Channel

The Huon River itself looks a bit ordinary until you get to Castle Forbes Bay just north of Port Huon where we live but then it opens up and is a beautiful river from there to the mouth

Hobart to Dover (without stopping) via Esperance Coast Road is about a 90 minute drive and from Dover back to Hobart via the Highway is about 70 minutes

Tassie is nice but the Huon Valley is especially nice scenery wise

Regards Don

Some lovely drives as well as boating spots down that way! I'm doing my first crossing from Victoria to head down there in December. Will be aiming to make Norfolk Bay by Christmas. Fingers crossed for some kindly weather! Not sure if I'll make it into the Huon Don but if I'm in that neck of the woods will give a holler.
