I am on foil drive prone-too old now to transition from sup to prone on paddle power alone and have HA 1080 but finding it too much on more powerful waves-over waist high.I'm 83kg on 55 L but will transition down to 38L -wondering wether to just go to 880 HA or 780 ???
Also tail advice would be appreciated-I'm thinking going to try 180 from flow235
Definitely try the 180 or even 140 tail before you decide to get another front wing as coming from a 235 tail you will notice a big difference.

Have you surfed before? and what age / ability are we talking about.
But either way at 83kg and using a foil drive the 1080 is way too big. Given the info so far i'd say the 880 might be your best bet.

I think the 880 is way too big, at 88kg I sup foil the 780 with shoulder high waves no problem. Haven't tried it with larger waves yet, so don't when will start to feel big. With a foil drive with overhead surf you can go 680 if you know what you are doing, otherwise 780

195 tail that I chopped and sanded down to ?140? demoed a 140 and didn't feel any significant difference to make me want the real one.

i was considering the fact he said he was too old to transition from sup to prone. Reading between the lines i'd still say the 880 is his best bet. Until and if we get more information.
On an unrelated side note - i winged the 880 today on the 7'2 DW armie board man it was fun. Has me really reconsidering what an ideal wing board would be.

I used the 195 for a long time. 140 is significantly better. Best tail they have made.

Yes, I chopped and sanded the 195 to almost the same shape and size of the 140. Just a bit thicker and not quite the same. tried them back to back, and a mate had a go as well and we both thought they felt very similar. Specially with the 50 fuse that loosens up everything. For suping I still use a chopped V tail with 60 fuse and old 72 mast. Only surf sup.
I mainly wing, and loving the 780, I can use it in less wind than the 925. Feels a bit slower but so much easier. It behaves so well.- Pumps great, you can really push it without worrying it will bite you back.comes out of the water no problem, you can hear it, but recovers no problem. And way better than the old HAs for jumping, easy landings without jumping again on touch downs. I still can't believe that at 88kg without gear, my 2 foils are 780 and 580.sounds BS. These new foils you can really size down gaining lots of performance without giving away much in terms of lift and stall speed.
Rule of thumb with these FD's on prone larger waves , is obviously the smallest foil you can get up on and not just that you still need enough cm2 to get you through broken water when you are half powered and free foiling. Plus starting is the number one issue. Catching larger waves and trying to pop up down the face is "A" Grade even for me , being able to start without a waves assistance then powering out and turning onto the face of an incoming fat bomb way out wide is as good as it gets. It lets you set your feet properly check out to go right or left and then drop into it..... just so good and such an easy way to get to your feet then onto a wave. Forgetting actual foil brands if you want to free start on smaller foils you need a longer board so forget the 3-7 , I ride everything on a 5-5 x 55 litre .You need the length of the board to build speed to get up. Forgetting foil brands this is my (88kg) combo for flat water starts. 720 or 770 longer fuse larger tail , 850 med fuse med tail , 980 short fuse med tail. The tail becomes pretty important on the FD as it helps with the launch and also stabilizes it on the narrow wing span of the shorter foils same goes for a bit longer fuse. Don't get head strung thinking you need a shorter board it's not the case the extra weight of the battery negates the swing weight of a 5-5 , trust me on this one I have done many hours of testing on this. Back to rear wings its not actual area but actual width or span that makes the huge difference a wider thinner tail makes a massive difference to the smaller foils for launching and stability , leave your shim's in the tool box.
