I've currently got an old carbon paddle from when I started SUP surfing 10 years ago. It was cheap at the time, but quite big, I reckon around 100sq inches
I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to get a new DW specific paddle (PPC, QB) and if that will help flat water paddle ups, or if it's not worth changing.

I think a stiff shaft is more important than the size of your blade. You'll probably snap it anyway in the learning process. My shed is a graveyard of broken gear. Some I have fixed and made good again. I'm happy with 85-90sq inches. Spend the money on a good long and skinny board, it will make more difference than any paddle will.

In my opinion the paddle makes a huge difference..
You should check with your local shop and see if they have a demo you can try.. As long as it's a high end paddle regardless of the brand.. I lighter paddle should let you speed up the recovery part of each stroke..
I have a very small area paddle and a couple of regular size paddles all top end quality.
I find the smaller paddle best for surf and my 14ft race board, less effort/load and doesn't effect wave count or speed. Less tiring and strain on elbows and shoulders.
I have a 14ft racing background and strongly believe a smaller blade with a higher cadence is more effective on the long run as those Pizza shovels and way better for your shoulder muscles and tendons. I,m using an Starboard Enduro Medium with the recycled plastic blade the most while still have full carbon high end Kenalu, QB and full carbon Gong paddles, but the Enduro is just as good and doiesnt break the bank.
Disclaimer!
I just started with the DW foil journey last week, but can do a flat water paddle up. All I need to learn how to transition from the paddle up to pump with my legs instead of just powering around on paddle speed:) Haven,t tried it in the waves or DW because of a lack of both of them right now. btw: I,m 188x96kg x49y so no superman either.
