Hi Foilers,

I'm having trouble linking waves when prone foiling my local beach break. I can mostly glide off the wave and turn and start pumping but generally stall before I get far. I really want to get way out the back and link heaps of waves out of the way of the surfers (they are my friends). I have a Naish 1400 HA and a Naish 2140 HA set up. After talking to a bunch of foilers on my last holiday I noticed no one was riding Naish gear for prone.

I'm thinking of switching to Axis, probably the art pro 1201 with a skinny tail (not sure which) and the 19 mm red mast (probably can't afford carbon at this stage). Can't really argue with 3 hours and 6 minutes. I'm 6'2" and 88kg, fitness and wave knowledge is all good.

Any thoughts??

I'd be looking at the Spitfire range for prone. You can run less span than the ART pros, which means your tips will be out less when carving on the bumps back in. Plenty fast enough for prone with decent glide and pumpability.

Look to get the 82cm mast. Personally I prefer the surfy feel of the Progressive tails, smaller the better. At your size, you'd probably like the 300 or 325.

One thing I like about Axis is all the gear is very interchangeable, so easy to customise and get it perfect depending on discipline. The secondhand market is also good to find gear and move on stuff you have progressed past. It doesn't cost much to buy a different front wing or tail to experiment.

Obviously you know my angle here, but I did want you to consider the new 2024 Naish line of HA foils before you go too deep into looking at moving. The new line is significantly higher aspect and have way more pump, speed and glide.

For prone, I'd maybe think the 2140 and 1400 are a little on the larger side anyway, the new 1240HA has a 103cm span and has plenty of pump power. I am 90kg, 6'2" and recently managed long pump outs and connections with the 840HA which is ridiculously small. But the 1040 with it's new 98cm span is really usable at our size now.

Best thing is they fit straight onto your existing setup.

Whilst the 1201 does boast some pretty impressive glide, you will sacrifice a huge amount of turn and control (please know this is not a dig at the 1201, it is a very impressive foil). With every foil there is a weigh off, and the more you get in one area the more you will sacrifice in another. The new Naish line of HA's have really impressively made a foil that turns better than before, but also brought more speed and glide to the game. I can confidently say they out turn most if not all HA's on the market.

Again, I am bias, and appreciate any others to contribute provided they have comparative experience.

Strongly suggest you line up a demo, or at least check out the new line.

Feel free to reach out if you need more info.

Ride safe,

JB
