Hi everyone, not really one to believe in curses or spells, however I might have brought a "Cursed" fin recently
A member of these forums who is local to me placed an add to sell his custom Smik Mini-style Lord, and it was just the size I was looking for. I somehow convinced my good wife that it was all meant to be and found myself the new owner of a two year old board the looks brand new.
At 9'1" x 31 and 130 L it's right in between the stock sizes and a perfect size for me.
The relationship started out perfectly, the first surf together was three hours in waist to chest high little peelers with offshore winds. And by some miracle even though it was a weekday I had the whole beach to myself, that never happens at the break. The next surf nearly the same, some other guys out but left me alone on my own bank. The next few surfs the same, the waves got better and only ever had a few guys out at any one time. Life could not have been better, the board was everything I expected and life was great.
So how did it all go wrong, well this is were the "cursed" fin comes in. I wanted an FCS ii centre fin so I could easily tune the board when out in the waves. A nice 7 inch fin selected, even in a matching blue colour was brought and then the curse began.
As a weekend warrior limited to two days off a week as soon as the new fin was installed, onshore winds found me, the swell would rise to be out of control or disappear overnight. Only on the days I had off work though, the days before and after would be perfect only to go south on my days off
And today the first of a two week holiday break with my wife still at work, summer arrived early with Northeast onshore winds blowing all night. And my secret back beach banks not yet recovered from the large winter swells, I was left to fight wind chop, waves bouncing off a cliff face and a rip current running through the peak too. I fell in more times in an hour than I have in a whole year, I tell you that new fin has it in for me, that or the old Smik fin is reaching out from the dark cupboard in the garage to hex my surfing.
Does anyone have a cure, should I surf in a garlic necklace, spin in circles three times before I paddle out. I cannot take two weeks of this, I would be safer back at work. Only then the surf will pump and the sun shine, any help will be welcomed
Stephen.
Nice looking board, I'd get my priorities right and chuck a sickie when its on.
Thanks mate, that happened with my first surf on the board although I did make an skin cancer check up for later that day to cover myself. I have had the last three mornings out on the board and we are getting along much better, seems that if you share a problem it's no longer is one
its prima donna behaviour of your Smik.
Send it to me and I show here how horrible the waves in the netherlands are. I take here out for 2 year in it, to learn here to deeply appreciate what she got when I send it back to you. After that she will be the most happy docile board you can imagine.
Thanks mate, for the very generous offer. I fear that once she has seen the sights of Europe and been charmed by a suave, sophisticated and no doubt handsome man, that she would never return to me
48y old a bit too fat and not enough hair, so if that the only thing that stops you...Right now I,m in Brandon Bay where the local shop sells Smiks and saw this week a Stylelord like yours IRL, what a gorgeous board!
