hey legends
looking at a new board and seeking any feedback on Splice 8'8 and JP surf Plus 8'6 like most looking for a board with stability for the usual average conditions
i just read latest thread on Splice thanks theSeb looking forward to your further reviews mate.
has anyone got any feedback on JP Surf Plus?
interesting outline looks a lot like Smik hipster tail but more refined nose. Doesn't seem to be any reviews or feedback out yet ?
Current boards
10.6 GTW Naish Nalu
8'10 Smik short Mac
8'10 Sunova Creek.
previously owned Smik hipster 8'10 great board to corky through at my weight 85kg.
Thanks legends
I'm interested in both these boards too. Not many Spices in the country yet I think and this is the first I've heard of the new JP. Couldn't even find a promo video of it. Looks good though! The JP old model wide bodies felt slow on the wave but this new one looks much better.
The Spice 8.8 is 140 litres. Do you really need all of those litres? The smik hipster 8.10 is 145 litres, I believe.
I have approx 20 kgs on you and I am questioning if I need all of those litres. I would consider going down to the 8.2 Spice at 121 litres. I am currently having an internal debate on what my next board should be. It's between the 8.7 x 29.5 SB Pro (130 litres) and the 8.2 x 30.75 Spice (121 litres), but I also have dreams of styling on an Infiniti New Deal.
So many boards, not enough time and money.

Gday theSeb thanks for responding mate
to be honest you've hit the nail on the head regarding the Splice - what Ltr board is suitable
I went & brought the Smik 8'10 a while back it was from memory 145ltr. Great once on a wave fast, great turns unfortunately out the back found it to corky and therefore not that stable for my 85kg in a bit of chop and wind, ended up offloading it to my brother in law who's 6'2 and 95-100kg great for his weight loves it. Also 32wide wasn't that much fun paddling out??
I think 130-135Ltrs at the moment is ideal
the creeks only 125 floats me well rails better positioned but it's a challenge in on choppy days looking for something more stable.
Yeh so many choices nowadays

You've mentioned your weight, but I don't see your height anywhere. As long as you are not stupidly tall, then I reckon at your weight something in the SB Spice 8.2 x 30.75 x 121 litres is likely to be a sweet spot. SB recommends 80-95 kgs for the 8.2. If you are freakishly tall, then fore/aft stability on a shorter board can take some getting used to.

I am 6'3" and initially struggled with fore/aft on my 8' x 133 litres Hypernut. That would suggest a board like an 8.2 Spice would be great for you, but may take a few angry sessions to sort out the initial issues between you two.

Certainly for me, this board seems tailor made to be my quiver killer. I am over the moon stoked and can't wait for the next session.

How's the size feeling mate for you now mate
think earlier you said you might consider smaller
do you think the 8'8 would be overkill and corky for my 85kg 6ft intermediate skills ass ??

I think for you it would be too big. Here is an interesting older thread on the same topic
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/SUP/What-s-your-ideal-volume-ratio-?page=1
If I were you, I would be jumping straight onto the 8.2 and some would argue even that is too big for you.
As for me, I will keep the 8'8" for quite a while because it handles all of the conditions that I encounter on a day-to-day basis and feels like an ultimate weapon to dominate a line up, even if there are long boarders around, who dominate me if I am on the Hypernut.
But I am at the stage where I want to keep "progressing" and my ultimate aim is to start entering local sup surf competitions, if there is an old fart, I mean veteran, division. Hence why I feel like I need to keep challenging myself and go smaller, because the 8.8 is far easier than I thought it would be.
Current internal debate is between an 8.7 Pro or an 8.2 Spice to add to my quiver for the "better" days.
I would say everything over 120l would be too big for you.An smaller board sits a bit IN the water instead of on top of it and that he;lps a bit with stability.
As reference, I sup in the netherlands, wich is like HELL for everybody who really enjoy proper waves because you #ssholes on the other side of the pond block all our waves.I,m 188cmx95-100kg 48y old with one malfunctioning foot and happily paddling on 130l as biggest board, 110l as smallest and a Hipster8.3x123l +spitfire8.6x30x125l. Both could be a size smaller but the 125l is with my 95-100kg a lot easier.
An bigger board makes turning and controlling imo a lot harder so I feel you with the Hipster8.10. That would be a boat for me as well.

yeh agree mate learnt the hard way making a purchase without a real demo???? 8'10 was probably 20ltr to much float! For my weight
how'd you find the spitfire heard there great.
I have the older V2 Spitfire, mine was already on the boat to Europe when they launched the V3 but I do like it a lot in bigger faster waves.
Here in the Netherlands I don,t use it at all, our waves are simply to small and to slow to do it justice. But during the holidays in French Britany/Cornwall/Ireland it is a great board on the bigger days.
It catches a bit earlier than the Hipster and is a bit more locked and gripyy in the turn. The turns are also a bit more drawn out as the Hipster On smaller waves I find it a bit holding me back, but in the big stuff it is really reliable and giving confedence.Again, with my 95 (+ ) kg the 125l boards are great and I wouldnt go any bigger. It makes boards corky and often harder to control as the ones sitting deeper in the water.
I don't have the new JP surf plus but I have they'd surf wide. I'm 6'2 85/90kg. This is my stable board, really good for weak mush waves, really easy to turn top to bottom but is not the fastest. Still use it regularly on choppy days. Moved to JP Surf 8'10 as my performance board, a different sort of stable to the surf wide, more slow to paddle but great to surf. Both really pushed my progression - so much so I've ordered a SB pro 8'7 - just to see how much a narrower board affects everything. For my height board outline and rocker have more immediate impact on how a board feels and reacts than volume alone does. Each board has helped me progress, wouldn't have believed two years ago I would consider a board like this, with rails and most the deck behind my feet under water to be stable. Still fall a lot when I'm stuffed though!!!
Saw the 2023 Jp Surf Plus 8/8 in the local shop last weekend. Looked a nice shape and super light for 130 ltr board. Like the Jp Wide body boards still hasn't a load of nose rocker but that's just my personal opinion and a local break requirement I always look for.

Hi Rossall, thanks for the feedback
did it have the same stepped deck as other JP boards ?

JP surf plus comes in 8'6 not 8'8 doesn't it?

Nah, I haven't got a GoPro or anything like that at the moment unfortunately. The wife has refused to get up at 5 am and sit on the beach with her iPhone. I think she is being quite unreasonable!
Good info here lads thanks
I've ordered the 2024 8'2" Spice in Carbon
(5'10" 87 kg.. old??)
never ridden one but it looks like a beast
my short board was an older JP slate 8' 127L in timber blazes on shore breaks and close outs but Heavy! can be tough to get going in fuller waves not quite enough rocker IMO
Interestingly I also have a JP slate 8'10" x 31.140L? In full carbon
its been an awesome board and solid construction great in small, full surf and more hollow waves up to 3 ft, But bit of a handful when it gets sporty
I pretty much ride everything in thruster configuration.
carbon is definitely the Go.if the budget stretches
Not sure about the the 'Quiver Killer' thing
It's a tag line that gets thrown out there occasionally
but if you surf varied conditions you might find you need more than one board
We'll see what the 2024 Spice brings. when they get around to building them!
