I just brought this second hand custom board in NZ but don't know what it is! Very spur of the moment. it seems to be about 270cm long by 68cm wide. Feels like it has extra thick glassing,
single concave, to flat out the tail
That was most likely not a model, but a full custom made for my friend Matt James from the East Coast of NZ.
He possibly had more Sunova's than anyone I know... and then he evolved to the Foil.
You scored a pretty sweet, one of a kind board there Great SUP!!
Please let us know how it rides!!
I will send the serial number to the Sunova office to see if they have any other information, but won't do that until after the vacation period, so it may be a few weeks for an answer as they will be super busy before and after the Holidays.
Thanks Rick! Much appreciated!
I did note his name on it and wondered if it might've been one of Matt's old boards! I used to be in touch with him when I was first starting out and remember seeing his cache of Sunovas!! my hunch is around 9'0 x 26.5, some sort of Casey revolution custom. Prob around 100-105l. it's running 105 sides and 85 centre fin, is this a normal fin combo on any of his models?
got to try it in some clean 1-2ft waves this morning, really nice glide / trim and got super loose when off the tail on some awesome cutbacks!
Thanks K dog, I'm still super interested to find out about the specs and how it differs vs the Casey revolution etc.
Seems really stable for its size and volume (which I'm guess is sub 100l). Had it out for a few surfs now, inc. some 100m+ rides on long soft rollers. I do find that it needs a little
bit of steepness and curve to keep it alive and moving after turns. Really enjoying a totally different style of surfing to my normal shorter, rockered performance boards

I am waiting until Dylan gets back from vacation.... then he will be swamped with work, so getting the info on this board may take a little longer.
Hi GreatSUP
I just got an awesome reply from Dylan at Sunova
The board was originally for Matt James, and produced in January 2017. The shape actually came from another Seabreezer from Portugal, Bruno Tereso who had initially owned a Style and wanted to have a more performance orientated custom design from Bert. This was all pre Revolution, and one of the first high performance long SUP's we developed.
I've attached a screenshot of the plan, plus a comparisons between this shape, and the current Revolution. The Revolution is flat bottom, but this one has some contours.
Please let me know if you need any more information?
Thanks,
Dylan
Thanks Rick! Super interesting little bit of reading there!
Seems to be quite close to the 9'0 revo but also a bit different at the same time.
A couple of other questions from me if possible;
Fins: mine came with 105 sides and 83 centre. This seems more like what the revolution has, but shaping file mentions mako 7" and 74 sides. Was it meant for a 2+1 or smaller centre style of riding? What fin combo will get the best out of it? I've got an 8" dolphin fin + side bites at home. Would this fin be too big?Glassing: does it have extra thick glassing? Feels a bit more weighty than my normal sunova's, but does look to have had a repair too. Rails / general design / ideal waves: I see it's got more of a neutral rail than the thinner revo, but also a more pulled in nose, tail and maybe a slightly thinner tail with a touch less rocker? Assuming not so much of a nose rider as a result, but intrigued what sizes and style of waves or maneuvers it would excel in?
I'm genuinely surprised at how stable it seems for the vol and dims! Probably wouldn't have brought it on face value if I'd known those dims in advance but it's surprised me at how it paddles and glides!
How to fin it mostly comes down to how you want to surf it.
If you want it to surf it more critically, like a HP longboard and from the tail, run it with the bigger 105 sides and 83 centre. Although at your weight those side fins are most likely too big and stiff - unless you really like the push it would give back. I do reckon you'd love it with quobba large sides and med centre (or all mediums). Bert likes using a smaller rear to loosen up the tail on his Hp longboards. I prefer it on my custom LB too.
If you want to use it more like an all-rounder, using more of the board, eg. from the middle - a 7-8" centre and maybe some 3.5-4" sides would be sweet. Shapers fins offer plenty of options.
I'd also try it with a big single. 9.5-10" - neutral fin. When u want lots of flow and style. It isn't a nose rider per-se but could still be ridden that way - it'd super fun on smaller days. The paddling benefit of only using a single fin shouldn't be sneezed at either.
In any way you fin it, you've scored a sweet ride that will be very versatile and a keeper I reckon.
I could ride it as a prone board haha

Generally LB SUPs from Sunova come stock with either a 7" or 8" center and differing sides depending on model and length.
Like Hoppo said, I generally prefer a smallish center or a big stiff center only, so give it a try with your 8".
Weight.... boards vary within a + or - 8% range
There was no indication on the CAD that it was a heavier layup
Get it in some waves and see how she runs!!
Thanks guys. I actually found an older shapers bamboo / carbon 5'5" progressive LB fin I can try too. We have crap surf on both coasts for the next week, so my froth is having to wait a little ?? but I did try it a couple of times already and liked it more and more. It seemed to really like a bit of a peak / push, it could glide along ok in the 1-2ft waves but seemed like it wanted more. When it did peak up, I was surprised at how nice a snap and cut- back felt! It seemed to rip them! Intrigued to play around with the fin options too and put it through some west coast juice! I imagine its shape will hold in OH swell provided it's not too hollow.
Feels about similar stability to my 8'2 x 29 107l Smik spitfire v3, but better glide, faster paddle speed, totally different board to ride which has been fun trying something new again!
