Has anybody looked into this - been on holidays for two weeks and surfed the SUP for 14 of the 17 days I have had off and dropped a few Kg's and feel as fit as when I was in my twenties - is there any sports scientists that have any idea.

I have also been converted to riding my Coreban fusion as a Quad - four little stock fins makes for some good slippery fun in the surf

Depends on how far you're paddling. Also how many times you're falling off and getting back on etc. But that calorie counting stuff is a waste of time. It's a lot more complicated than that.

They can average it out for swimming, running cycling dependant on pace, distance and time so be interesting to see if anyone with any real idea has done the calcs

My misses had a calorie counter on during the race at robe. It measured 400 cal burnt in 25 minutes.

i was thinking of wearing a heart rate monitor to see where the average rate sits over 2 or 3 hrs in the surf? If we're in the fat burning zone or not?

Hi,

Found this whilst googling a different topic, it happened to appear in a linked article.

18) How many calories do you burn stand up paddling?

The average male can burn 800-1,000 calories an hour stand up paddling and the average female, approximately 500-700 calories per hour. This is assuming you are paddling pretty hard for the full hour.

According to my GPS/heart rate monitor I use up 1008 kilojoules for 90 minutes of cruising bike riding. Heart rate is hovering around 140 bpm so not really exerting myself.

That coincidentally is the same energy density as one Mars bar.

I think I got similar results last time I wore my GPS supping.

Just my two cents, exercise by itself will not cause you to lose weight. You cannot exercise away the results of too much junk food, pies and booze. You would have to be going hard all day, every day. It has to be mixed with sensible diet and, most importantly, portion control.

1 stubbie of heavy = 590 kJ = 40-60 minutes exercise
1 53 gram Mars bar = 1010 kJ = 60-90 minutes exercise
1 Big Mac = 2060 kJ = 4 hours?
1 Meat pie = 1800 kJ = dunno. I feel sick now. I might have some chocolate to cheer myself up.

And then it all comes down to what else you eat that day, a bed ridden person with no excercise will
burn off a Big Mac if thats all they eat that day.

In another life and a keen endurance sport participant I had to count calories to ensure I got enough while doing several hours of cycling swimming and running a day - without calculating it each day the weight would drop and after hitting 63 kg's and 178cm - it was time to monitor it properley

Once you have been involved in sport where its key to know whats going in and whats being burned some of us still find it interesting to see what different sports activities burn even if in the long run it means absolutely nothing to everyone else
