10' Infinity New Deal. Anyone experiment with fins on this board. My friend has this board and it had a 7" center with two small sidebites. The board was amazing, but it needed to be loosened up just a bit.
They recommend the Thruster "Angry fin" which could do the trick... but skeptical on a 10x31 151L sup. Any feedback would be appreciated!
I have the smaller new deal with thruster, plenty loose the infinity fins are very good. The 7 center fin would be nice for holding the tail in for nose riding (not that big really for a nose rider). Did you try moving the center fin forward in the box? That can make a big difference. I also tried 3.75 sidebites and normal thruster center that came with board, worked fine but liked the stock fins better.
I have the stock thrusters in there, if I recall Dave Boehne said he usually likes the back edge of the side fines 2" in front of the leading edge of center fin, that was for Blurr but that's my default for ND, think it's a hair in front of the middle of the US box. A few guys around where I am have this board and I think they are all on the stock 3 fin setup.
Colas on performance longboard would you still run the smaller fin in center? I haven't tried Q fins on New Deal yet
Don't you need a bigger center fin for nose riding?
maybe a trade off between nose ride vs turns? I didn't expect this board to be so much fun in winter surf, I really like it for horizontal turns in longer period higher tide stuff

I must say I never use a bigger fin in the center. For me it combines the drawbacks of the thruster (drag) with the drawbacks of the single (stiffness). I hated it when I tried it.
On my longboards, I always go single (for speed, flow and noseriding in smallwaves) or thruster, even with a smaller center, or even twin fins + trailer... or quads. Quads would be the best setup for "horizontal turns in longer period higher tide stuff", but the speed of a thruster Quobba setup will also help. Or a twin + trailer.
I cannot find the interview of Harley Ingleby that describes how he designed his fin set, with the sides bigger than the central. Note that he now even prefers quads.
You can noseride with twin, thrusters or quad setups, but you must take care to always keep a bit more speed than with a single fin.
And if the waves are slow, a single fin is much more fun than a 2+1 setup: faster and more pivoty.
The 2+1 allows you to maintain speed better in carving than a single fin however.
Perfect and thank you! Your knowledge is very helpful. I also don't like bigger center fins, always smaller.
Will let you know how those Infinity "angry fin" goes with the New Deal.
By the way, the New Deal is a pretty sick board for 10'. It is my small wave board. I use my Sunova SP25 for better waves and the 10' New Deal for small summer waves. Perfect combo.
The Sunova SP25 with the Quobba is magic. A little stiff (next time we have waves I do have a smaller trailer - hoping that loosens things up) but fast and holds.... Pretty crazy fin, in a good way!

On boards with a central US Box like the new deal, you can try to move the central fin forward to loosen it.
I found larger sides + trailer really nice on bigger boards it transformed my speed which I've since sold. New deal doesn't have quad option, honestly mine is so fast and turny with stock thrusters I was never tempted to try different fin options. If anything you can project too far down the line, probably typical for any fast longboard. It surprised me because the stock center thruster fin is much bigger than what I would ever use on other boards, fin position probably plays a big role also. If I'm not too lazy I'm going to try swapping in my small trailer on a small day.

I have an 8.10 Sunova Steeze that I have ridden lots of fin combinations.
If you want to loosen it up move the centre fin forward. On smaller days run a 6" fin. If you want super loose just take out the middle fin. It will turn great on a wave but harder to paddle in. I have also used a 10" solo centre fin pushed forward which was suprisingly loose.
I use the quick release fcs II connect fins so I can quickly change or re-position middle fin.
Used a quobba setup (2 large sides and medium middle) on an 8.10 Sunova Speed and it was magic. Fast and loose with the ability to pump to stay on a wave. Held a great line on bigger faces yet turned easily. Great set-up from 1 to 4ft. The only downside was on bigger days I got too much speed.
