Hi All,
moving in these days to Melbourne and beside kiting, freestyle and surfing, i'm really looking forward to share waves in the surrounding spots.
Not knowing the culture and rules of the area, i was wondering if in all spots, sups are welcome, for instance in the surf coast.
any nice sup left handed wave in the area?
See you soon!
basically all of the reefs and points are rights all along the surfcoast.
You'll find some good lefts along some beach breaks - 13th, Draino's, Fairhaven etc.
Sups are 'tolerated' at most breaks except for (IMO):
Point Impossible (1st break) - very heavy longboarder local scene. The breaks to the right are ok though.
between Steps (jan juc) and Southside (just past Bells) - full of shortboarders
Cylinders at 13th - same.
I guess the exceptions are if you SUP like Kai Lenny (i.e. you rip better than the majority of shortboarders) or if the waves are very very small.
I had an awesome session at Bells last Wednesday. 4'++. My first ever surf/SUP at Bells (and in Vic). Not a bad word said by the locals....but you need to be capable of holding your own otherwise give it a miss.

It's good that you had a great session at Bells and that no one hassled you.. but to those others thinking about it.. Please don't.. no matter how good you are.. Unless you're DogMan..

Why?, as long as you're respectful and its not busy its fine, No one group owns the ocean and its still crown land as far as I know.
Sheet I even surfed winki a couple of times got nothing but love, mind you there were only 6 out there on each occasion.

it's very rarely not busy if over 2 foot swell... If it's a 3-4 foot swell and cleanish I usually count around 50 guys at winki and 40 or so at Bells - more on weekends with the visitors from Melb too...not quite like superbank but the locals are just as vocal...
There are so many breaks along here that are just as good (for SUP) that you don't need to go to Bells...I get it though - guys want to say they "surfed winki / bells", but breaks like Jarosite and Addis are sweet with no aggro in the water and they are 2 mins from Bells by car, plus the crowds are usually way smaller...
I even got in an argument with a female Surf skier yesterday at Roadknight of all places...She dropped in on me 3 times in 15 mins and didn't follow the breaking wave (just went straight), so after the third one I said 'get off the wave and know your etiquette" She replied " f_ck off, we all need to share waves" and then gave me the bird. If she were a guy it would have been on and i'm as calm and forgiving in the water as anyone - but to respond like that? that's just not on.

NO one likes drop ins at best but, when the wave is wasted it will get most surfers blood up.

Mate most of the time I'm more than happy to surf super tubes, etc, but occasionally the bells toll.
yeh I get what you're saying, but like I said if you go and there's only a few out and it's clean and calling, well what's a fella suppose to do. And if you're getting the same abuse at roady then it really doesn't matter does it. You can get abused or loved anywhere

If she had done that where I grew up in Newcastle 20 years ago, she'd find her car burning in the carpark...

And if it were Stockton 30 years ago, ouch !
hate to appear ignorant but is that Dubai your surfing in the pic??
Yes it is. Indeed we get glassy waves once a while.
So basically surf everywhere, be respectful and surf with a smile :)
