No such thing as a bad day for paddling...

Since having a SUP and since improving my skills and balance, I'm finding that there is rarely - if ever - a day when you could not go out for a paddle.
I used to look at the wind and wave graphs and write days off because my skill or comfort level were lacking. Now, I am extending my range and getting out in conditions that would have in the past had me staying off the water.
Went out this morning in wet, grey, gusting southerly conditions, and had a blast. My balance is improving, as is my fitness and my fun levels.

Moral of this story: grab your board, get outside your comfort zone, extend your limits and extend your fun. There's always something new to learn.

you need to go get a job mate, not fair that you keep rubbing it in that you are out paddling, and I am stuck in the office...

Yeah.....but some days are much more enjoyable than others!!
I was the only loonie at my local this morning in the 25 knot SE'er.
Downwind was fun until I started thinking I have to paddle back into it to get back to where I started from.
Struggled to keep up with the old farts walking on the beach when heading back into the wind.
Good workout though!!.....good way to start the day......BEFORE WORK.

You must have been late mate (or early)

(there were 5 other loonies out, but I wasn't one of them)

I got on the water early.....at Sandy.....had had enough of the wind by 7.30 and bailed.
Where were the other crew??......HMB??
HMB might have been a better option hugging the beach??
Tomorrow is not looking a great deal better

HMB crew did a reverse downwinder from HMB to the Blue Oyster - got a bit tasty out there by their account. Way too tasty for me by the sounds of it.

Just for reference - HMB can be total crap when it's had a day or 10 of southerlies, with all the reflected wash off the sea wall and the Cerb it turns into a washing machine. When it turns a bit more westerly it can be fun though, there's a sneaky little runner picks up at the first point.
Sandy/Hampton are often a better go for ins & outs in those conditions (but still testing, as you found out this morning )

Nice post!

I gotta say this is one of the best things about SUPs. While I have been pushing myself to get out in some decent surf I have to admit two of the best sessions I have had of late have been in tiny stuff. One was more "stuff" than waves due the fact I was just messing about in the shoal break inside a river mouth. No crowd on that one!

Hey Jason,

Yeh, I know the feeling. Sometimes you just gotta go (until you realise you didn't charge the GoPro enough)

That is indeed a very desperate place to paddle. I am about to go surfing now in water that is a least a bit cleaner than that Golf course. Rain rain go away.

Yeh Paul it was one of those days when all the local waterways were blown out and have always thought the main lake at The Lakes golf course looked inviting. The clubbies used to paddle skis there for their short stuff.
I have put that days experience in the category of 'seemed like a great idea at the time'.
Unseen on the surface, the lake is full of reeds which gives one hell of a drag when paddling, the GoPro went flat after 5 mins and I lost a thong. After about 20 mins I decided I would just pull up and feed the ducks - but they wouldn't come within 50 metres of me. I couldn't get the stench of the mud off me after 3 showers. All in all a wonderful experience
