Hey Starlet,

there are several areas geared for surf tourism. Probably the best areas to visit are Vanimo near the indonesian border on the main island of New Guinea and Kavieng on the far north Island of New Ireland. I have not been to Vanimo but its supposed to have some of PNGs biggest waves and there are several surf clubs and accomodation options there.

Kavieng I have been to and there are a variety of breaks within a short dinghy trip from town so that no matter what sort of swell you have theres always a chance of one of them working. If visiting Kavieng I recommend Nusa Island retreat but there are other options too. January-Febuary is a good time to visit for swell but its the high season and accommodation can be hard to come by. I would try and contact Sean at Nusa soon if you plan on visiting Kavieng as they get booked out quickly. There is also Rubio and Clems place in New Ireland which are pretty good.

Bspot and Piros spent time at Clems place and can probably tell you more about the waves there.

There is also Tupira surf club which runs a guest house just outside of Madang on the mainland. They are a bit more basic accomodation but have some good waves that work well when the swell is on.

For all of these areas the swell season runs more or less October to April.

Heres some links FYI

Good luck, feel free to hit me up for any more detailed questions and make sure you come say hi if passing through Port Moresby!

The only way to do PNG is with Andrew Rigby on the PNG Explorer. The guy knows the place better than anyone and will do whatever it takes to get you good waves. The resorts are very limited. Nusa Island is way too fickle and Clems is a 30 minute dingy ride to any sort of consistent wave. The trip I did in January this year was awesome.
