Yeah make sure you read the comments left from the disgruntled board riders. Apparently all SUP riders are old and fat!!!!

No, it's not the new windsurfing, it is the new wave skiing. Basically it's for old fat guys who are too unfit to paddle out the back on a Malibu.
I don't mind people paddling around Noosa river on them. But when they take them out to a surf break and steal all the waves... Well then it gets really annoying.

"steal all the waves"?? Suggest you call Crimestoppers to keep these crooks off the waters and protect your personal property.

I agree to a certain extent - we finally got rid of goat boats from the surf & now there's heaps of SUPs. It's fine if they want to paddle around but they are hardly a device designed for surfing. They are dangerous & 99% of users don't know how to handle them. I've seen lots of people cleaned up by these things. Big, heavy, poor maneuverability, but plenty of people loving the new fitness fad.
CommenterKick Location Inthemoot Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:09AM
You think you own the waves? That sounds like insular "bogan-speak" to me.
CommenterWaves Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:20AM
Agreed. Ok for fitness and make people think they look like Jennifer Aniston in a celeb mag, but stay outta the surf. Simply dangerous having a 15kg board flicking around by a novice in the surf. Saw a 10 year old kid taken to hospital as a result of this.

@ Commissioner and Waves - If you don't know how these SUP get on waves and the general rules of surfing etiquette (which this type of rider ignores) then you are missing the point. It is not about insular bogan rules or Neanderthal ideals of 'stealing' or 'locals only' surf mentality that you fear.
CommenterJoe Location Sydney Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:53AM
Right on - goat boats for flabby arsed off farts bulldozing their way through the line up.
CommenterTJ Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 12:29PM
Spot on BatMan - keep em' on flat water all you fools - if you're not an accomplished surfer DO NOT take them into the surf - especially around kids surfing. I've seen a number of people injured by SUPs being used by learners in the surf - 10-11 feet of 12-15kg board propelled by a wave on the end of a 10 feet leg rope - that's a lot of potential to cause a lot of damage over a wide area.
All you execs reading this story - keep it real - you're NOT Kai Lenny - stay in the bay!

Adam. These boards are not just used but "old fat guys", but yeah their riders sometimes hog the waves. In their quest for wave domination as opposed to sharing, they moved from short boards to mini mals to mals and now stand up paddle boards (the new Goat Boats). Next is viking ships! Just share the waves a bit more please and leave some waves for the shorter boards.
Commenterpdiddy Location Richmond Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:07AM

Yeah, keep them out of the surf. It belongs to surfers only. Not SUPs or for that manner swimmers like me.
CommenterMr Cool Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:41AM

You can carry you SUP on your CRV, SUV and OMG how SIC you must be. Now don't forget to put the my family stickers on!

There is set of "rules" generally adhered to by wave riders, regarding how waves can be shared. This is sometimes referred to as "surf etiquette".
The basic rule for who "owns" a wave is as follows:
There is a take off zone where waves can be caught. The person sitting closest to the breaking part of the wave in the take off zone, has priority, they "own" the next wave.
A rider who takes off further along the wave from a rider with priority, who is up and riding - is "dropping in" this is one form of wave stealing. Another is when a rider paddles to a position between the surfer with priority and the breaking wave. This is called "snaking". It is the later that brings SUP riders into conflict with surfers. A SUP can catch a wave before it breaks, therefore it is very easy for an SUP rider to paddle to a position further out from the take off zone and ride a wave between the surfer with priority and the breaking point of the wave. Effectively "snaking" surfers with priority. SUP riders who do this are considered to be "stealing" waves. Like other forms of theft - the perpetrators can sometimes find themselves subject to abuse and violence.

Give them a year or two and they will be gone, they are just a fad that dosent really make any sense - either go surfing or kayaking
CommenterKEn Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:52AM

Exactly. It might be worth it as an exercise, but as a method of transport its crap (kayaking or any proper boat will get you there faster) and as a method of having fun then its not up there with surfing. Or body boarding or body surfing.
Its an exercise - which admittedly the article emphasised - not a sport.
CommenterASD Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 1:30PM
Genius you are... 50 years is a long time for a fad...

These are pretty much the razor scooters of the ocean.
CommenterRadbloke Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 11:55AM

Old fat guys, be they on mals, goat boats or SUP's will always be a problem. Not so much in terms of them wave-hogging (most old blokes I've encountered are pretty cool, it's men in their 30's trying to keep up with the guys in their 20's that are the biggest pain), but in regards to their health and fitness and ability to control their surf-craft. I've seen some guys out on the Peninsula whose ambition easily outweighs their ability when it gets big because they simply can't control these big boards safely. As much as they would never admit it, they're just not strong or fit enough any more. So while a SUP is a fast track (i.e. lazy) way to getting out onto waves without needing to build the fitness base and upper body strength of a surfer on a short-board (hence why it is favoured by older surfers), it in no way means you can start pulling into 2 metre swells like you did in your 20's and 30's with the guys on short-boards because you can't push or dive them under waves. More likely you'll more than likely end up doing someone some serious harm because SUP's can become lethal weapons in big surf as they will crash along through the white-water and will plough through anything that gets in their way.
So by all means by an SUP and enjoy paddling them round on flat water through to small 1-2 foot surf breaks but think hard, and objectively, about yourself and ability to control it in anything bigger. In inexperienced hands they can do a lot of damage and you'll find yourself bereft of friends pretty quickly out in the water and carpark if you don't use them responsibly
CommenterEl Hatcho Location Mornington Peninsula Date and time March 27, 2013, 12:43PM

Agreed El Hatcho. A bit of common sense and courtesy goes a long way.
Fundamentally to make the argument accessible to the folks that haven't actually surfed or ridden a SUP (yet feel inclined to comment!), the same points you raise apply to people who drive big or highly powered cars, yet they can't stay in their lanes or turn a corner properly.

Injuries outweigh benefitsSafe .sex is safer, and more comfortable, and Doctors agree its the best exercize, if done naturally.
CommenterKane Location Date and time March 27, 2013, 12:55PM

Thanks for listing the Perth hire companies, we have heaps by the way.
But don't worry, here in the West we can afford to buy our own boards and have been up on this trend for years
Commenterash Location Perth Date and time March 27, 2013, 1:04PM

I can't believe people actually have fallen for this marketing stunt! There must be a couple of people sitting out there somewhere laughing all the way to the bank. Standing on a board with a paddle whilst looking as balanced as a water buffalo on a tightrope has to be one of the most stupid fads I've seen!
I'n about 12 months we'll see them all on the side of the road for rubbish collection day!

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH etc etc etc heard it all before.
Why is it that when someone or some people do something new or "different" to the norm you get all of these "WANKERS" mouthing off again.
Looks like they will miss out on a lot of pleasure by not doing what we all love.
Oh well, guess I will go for a paddle!

Same old story. I suppose there will always be haters. Glad the numbers of moaners are dwindling.
Interestingly enough, the majority of crew that bagged SUP at my local 2-3 years back all have SUP's now and froth over it.
End of the day, I have zero time for people who judge a majority over the actions of a small minority..

ITS VERY INTERESTING BEING 54 YEARS OLD AND HAVING SURFED FOR 40 YEARS.
LOOKING BACK WE HATED SURF SKIS ,KNEE BOARDERS' LONGBOARDS THEN IT WAS MINI MALS ,CLUBBIES AND UP UNTIL 5 OR 6 YEARS AGO LID RIDERS WERE THE WORST.
BUT NOW WE HAVE SUPS TO WHINGE ABOUT.
WE ARE SO LUCKY WE HAVE SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OTHERWISE WE WOULD HAVE TO WHINGE ABOUT THE WEATHER.
TOM/LAIRD/DAVE KALAMA/WORLD CHAMP KIAHAY DEBOITZ FROM QUEENSLAND AND EVEN JERRY LOPEZ ARE DOING IT. BUT F---- WHAT WOULD THEY KNOW?????

There's some excellent comments in that article, mostly narrow minded, but they'll change over time

I have found that the elite level hot young crop of surfers locally are very accepting of a range of different boards and they all seem to use them, including SUPs. Many of them cross-over between mals and short board regularly.

The majority of negative reaction to SUPs that I have seen comes from a small group of older mal riders who have enjoyed a 'perceived' dominance in the line-up and now feel threatened.....Most who quietly inquire about SUPs behind the scenes
Also a bit of Facebook chatter at times, but this is usually driven by self promoting would-be's herding the mob.

Sure there is the obvious concern about the inappropriate use at times by people who can't handle them but this is true for mals as well.
