Hi,
If I am comfortable on a Surf SUP 31 wide and 155L and no real desire to go any higher performance, what width should
I be considering in a race style SUP? I really only want to use it for longer paddles and very small surf conditions and maybe participate in a social style paddling event. I was thinking 12'6 long
All the race style SUP's seem to be only 27 to 28 wide and I am nervous about going that narrow.
I know I can demo, but I remember when I started off on a surf SUP the demo was easy as it was flat water, once I got out in the waves it was a whole different story.
Thanks
Demo heaps. Try heaps. Buy something that suits you, buy something you will enjoy. Seabreeze buy and sell is full of good boards at good prices

Head to www.onestanduppaddle.com or pop in and see us at 8 Thrower Drive Currumbin. We have heaps of good used in store atm too. X angie
They are different to balance on than your current board but the idea of all the volume in the rails of a race board is as the board tips a bit you are pushing that volume under water. Then at some point that volume will want to float back up again. There will be an adjustment period but you won't need as much width as your standard board.
If you still prefer a bit more stability I would suggest something like a Naish Glide so chase up your local dealer.

Just to be totally independent (and I am fully SIC) I can concur would even think of going narrower on this board (27 or 26). Had the opportunity to put my 105 kgs on the 23" wide board and found it was remarkably stable, even almost kept paddling across the open channel in the wide chop just to see, then realised the board wasn't there for me to demo so stepped onto something much wider so someone else could see, and they rate it too.
Do yourself a favour take it for a spin

You should be nervous about going that narrow.. How heavy are you?
I'm 95 kg ..14 x28 is great for me .
I'm sure the 12.5 x 30 will be ok too.
you probably will have to demo ,if poss..If looking to go that narrow ,not for me .
I like 28.I paddle for fun only ,not racing .which Im sure the narrower boards will be faster On a given day.
When you go a race type board you lose a bit or the side to side stability, but is more than made up with the front to back stability. When I stepped onto a race board for the first time is was 14 x 27 and it was really tippy for the first 30 seconds... but you adjust pretty quick.
Don't forget that you're looking at a longer board which will equates to more surface area on the water so you can afford to go a bit narrower and stay stable . I'm 102kg and very comfy on a 29" x 14'.
i'm 95 kgs David.
Am I better off looking at a 12'6 x 30 rather than 14 x 28?
Thanks
I'm a similar weight to you and find my 14x 28" Maliko pretty good.. as long as it doesn't get too rough.. I'd recomend looking at something in the 28-29-30" range..
As far as Naish boards go the 14x 29" Glide would be the best option for you IMO but it's a pretty big/heavy board..
The 12'6"x 30" would also work well.. but at your weight the 14 is a better option and I'd only recomend the 12'6" over it if storage is a problem for a 14' board..
At 95kg you should have no issue with a 14 x 28 if its the right board. The board Angie has suggested IMO is for people between 80kg to 120kg and we have guys that heavy riding them .
Nice parallel out line wide tail forgiving nose not to much roll on the bottom is what you are chasing

I've got 40kgs on you and I paddle a 14' x 28" easily
