I'm interested to hear what people tend to wear when race training in the colder months. In the past I've gone a long sleeve top and shorts, or a wettie when it is raining (which gets way too hot). I'm sure there are some much better options on offer though. Please enlighten me :)
Yup, the Vicco boys love their tight Lycra........
Ha.. I was thinking about paddling tops..
DJ. I have a Lavacore half zip top (grey one) on website and an Adrenalin rashie type top that is thick and sort of fluffy on the inside. Not as hot as wetsiuts and breath a bit. Although the Lavacore gets a bit heavy when wet.
I've seen cycling and even hiking gear on some.
I've been told Vaikobi, from Sydney I think, is the go.
A wetty would be hot for sure. The principles behind a wetty is that you're submerged in the water for most of the time - think regular/prone surfing.
I am thinking about getting another long sleeved rashie for this winter.
I think my current board shorts should be fine.
ET.
I knew there would be some good options to drop some coin on.
I like the look of the vaikobi top-has anyone had any experience with these? I have a thermal rashie that I wear sometimes but these look a little more breathable.
Hey Gee,
I have the vaikobi vest and long sleeve top for the colder months, the vest is good as is or under a rashie or t shirt and the long sleeve is great when its a bit colder, I really like the under arm mesh.
It can depend on how hard your training and the temp but I'm stoked with mine.
I've tried radiator ( better for in the water ), an oneill vest and adrenalin, but i use my vaikobi gear more often.
Here in Sydney for flat to choppy paddling away from surf I work with layers. A breathable short sleeving running t-shirt paired up with cycling arm warmers. Over the top I wear a sleeveless running jacket that zips open all the way down the front. If it's blowing a gale, the jacket and the arm warmers work well. If it warms up and I'm overheating, then I remove bits and and store them hooked over my waterbelt. On the bottom it's boardies or a pair 2XU tights if it's breezie. A pair of 1.5mm neoprene booties keeps the worst of it off your feet.
I use the Vaikobi gear during winter in Sydney.
It's breathable but still keeps you warm.
I've used it in Victoria several times with no issues.
Good gear.
Anyone tried anything like this? If so any good? Thinking NZ NI here!
Hawaiiheke, thanks for the pic.... I really like the look of that for summer... who makes it? I didn't have any luck googling around
