Hi All,
Happy New Year, and all that jazz.
I bought my 7 year old a new foamie to learn to surf on, for Christmas.
We're off to Tewantin/Noosa in a couple of days, for 5 nights, and the Minister of War and Finance has expressed an interest in joining us in the water, on a surfboard.
I have two options for her, but I'm not convinced either are quite right, so which is the better option?
FYI - She's about 160 cm and about 55 kg.
I have a 7'2" Softech board foamie, but am not convinced that it's quite big enough to learn to surf on?
Other option is a 9'6" O&E/Creative Army 'General' epoxy soft board - a better size, in my opinion, but the textured deck is a rash machine, and probably moreso for her at 23 3/4" wide.
She has caught a couple of waves in the past, on an 11 footer in Waikiki, so doesn't really count.
Which is the better option for a small female beginner?
Mate merry Christmas to you and all, I see this as the and I mean the perfect opportunity to buy your next board for her I mean you of course, she won't know the difference
I know - that makes perfect sense. Especially considering I was originally tossing up between the 9'6" General and a 9' CatchSurf/Odysea Log. The 9' Log would be just about perfect, I reckon.
That said, I need to do this without buying any more boards. I don't have the space for the last 4 boards!
I'd buy the Odysea Log -- a win for everyone.
There are also some good longboards on FB marketplace around Noosa right now (if you really want to torture yourself )...
Happy holidays to you and the family!
P.S. This guy posts most days, mainly boat and bar oriented, but it gives a nice view of the waves towards the rivermouth (often a fun option when the points aren't breaking):

One in, one out....
You go wash your mouth out with soap, Young Man!
I should probably clarify, I already own the 7'2" Softech and the 9'6" General - so which of these two would be the better option?
Greeney - that's one of my fave YouTube channels. And also one of my fave spots to surf. I reckon 4 outta 5 (maybe more) of my surfs at Noosa are down in the Woods.
It's a bit like Goldilocks and the three bears boards. That one's a bit too small. The other one's a bit too big. And the third one'$ ju$t right.
No, don't thank me. Glad to be of a$$i$tance.
Edit: I'd probably pick the Softech cos I couldn't carry the other one to the surf.
Starting off the year in fine form there, Greeney!
I didn't even think of the 'carry' situation. The 7'2" it is, then.
By the looks of the surf cams and the Around Noosa vids there were some fun sliders to be had, Damned. (And a few people to share the fun with!) Hope you and the family enjoyed the break.
Thanks Greeney - it was a great break, for both me and the family.
4 out of the 5 mornings were great surfs (one was messy and blown out). Even the 'crowded' days were great, in that the crowd was fun to be with.
I even managed to surf the 7'6" foamie we took up for the wife, which surprised me.
Good times!
My wife asked me if I wanted to go to Noosa for my BD in February, I said yeah but nah the place is over run like everywhere

It is, but is isn't. Seems to be luck of the draw, so to speak. If there's any swell on the points, they always come with a crowd. This last week, being school holidays, by 6.30 am, there were parents pushing their kids in on waves- which is great on one hand, but painful on the other.
Down in the 'Woods', by the river mouth, it was a mixed bag. Some days had a crowd, others didn't. My last day, Tuesday, I had an exceptional session down there. There were a handful of people out, great conditions, and I was surfing a bank that was just myself and a not unattractive young lass - and she was friendly and chatty (and instigated the chats, not me being an old perv), and a great, stylish surfer. Was an excellent session - great waves, great company.
Also had an amazing session on the Saturday, just wide of First Point. First Point was, not surprisingly, crowded, but myself and a couple of others were sitting wide of the break, and at a less frequent interval, the swell would swing wide, and we were on. Again, a really friendly, welcoming, and wave-sharing group of peeps.
I've no doubt, that in Feb, outside of school hols, you could get some great surfs in - especially early in the morning.
But could also have bad luck and get flogged by crowds.
Either way, happy birthday for Feb!
My last trip to Noosa was during the Noosa festival paddler out in the dark great waves not many out until 6 am then repeat at night great vibe but I got hungry and hit it at peak time only to get long rides but the paddle up the point was crazy nearly died a few times
