Anyone chasing speed on freeride foils in the ocean?
I'm finding my best speeds are in wind range of 20-25 knots, above 25 knots of wind the water turbulence adds drag and instability so seem to go a knot or 2 slower.

Best speed so far is just over 45kmh (24.4 knots) - wind SSW 20 knots, 4m wave sail and 550cm2 wing (smallest wing in the pix), 255cm2 rear in least lift (flat) setting.

Curious what others are getting.
Too much fun

Hey Azymuth
What devise are you using to measure speed?
nothing better than flat tack through ocean swell although I know I will be disappointed with speeds!

I am finding stability (lack of) of wave sails being the biggest hinderance to decent speed. The draft moving around makes the foil pitchy. Need to do some work on stiffer battens to hold the draft better.

No ocean swell here, just crazy gusty winds, but 21 knots is my typical high speed on a 3.7 wave sail in 21+ish knots. SS 730PFI wing and ps400 stab. 24 knots in ocean swell (Azymuth) sounds intense.

26knots on 750 front 190 stab 5.5 sail. Max speed and not happy there but Nm just over 20knots is a real indication. In Busso bay and yes it gets lumpy out there too. Best on a southerly.

Suunto 5 watch - it's accurate , I've checked it against a GT31 many times.

Epic speed - is that on race or freeride gear?
Do you have a pix of your kit?

I sail in the muddy waters of the Solent where you get very short chop and with wind against tide can be 1m so lighter wind days are faster. 16 to 20 kts of wind 6m NP v8 flight 725 FW 105 fuse and 255 -2 RW 26kts top end and then using same set up but 575FW 28kts, plus plenty of brave pills! Go to the flat waters of Weymouth and thankfully/finally into the 30s with 500 meters in high 20s. So I have a 7m,6m and 5m NPv8 which is the Free Ride sail, and can stay with many who are on full race kit. Bring on Defi 2024!!!!!!!!!

Hey azymuth, BSN101 is on patrik foil sails. I'm getting up to 25kts 2s and up to a 23kt NM on a 5m severne foilglide2 and starboard 560 front and 210 stab out at Busso but am struggling to find the courage/stupidity to go much harder than that! And yes a southerly/sw is definitely the preferred direction

Patrik Foil Race 145, AEON Ti 95x750x190 Patrik GT3 5.6 (not5.5). I'll take a pix soon. Patrik goes out on 4.8 & 450x190 and does 30+ knots. Looked scary as hell LOL

Been dialling in the Medusa pro769 (700cm2). This is an awesome wing. 22.5 knots at our local in 1-1.5m short period wind swell 15-20 knots. Now at the point I trust the wing. Previously I would slow down to negotiate the ramps to avoid breaches at speed over the swell. On my other wings the GOD noise (gurgle of doom) would end in an abrupt dismount. This wing just continues to push Can't wait to get this into some long period ocean swell.
