I'm after a bigger fin for my Fox 140, I'm thinking something in the 48-52cm range and more of a powerful race fin than a Freeride fin for those light wind days with the 8.6. I can find and have some nice Tuttle box ones but nothing in power box.
Any ideas? If I can get them in Canada even better.
last resort is taking a file to one of my tuttles and converting it, should work as far as width is concerned but the powerbox is slightly longer so there would be a gap at the front and back, not sure that would matter to much?
The gap would be 2.5 to 3mm each end at board level tapering down about 5mm . I wouldn't think it would effect much . However filing a tuttle down to a PB would be a epic journey . Ive done these mods before but i used a milling machine to get the angles perfect . Ive converted two formula fins to halfway between freeride and pointer to 50 and 53 cm . Both work great and make plenty of lift . Both these fins are way better than a JP freeride 52 for planing in light winds . I believe JP make a PB supersport 52 but are rare secondhand or very expensive new . Doing the box change by hand could be done , but its probably going to turn ugly . Select might make one.
Have you checked out Makani fins? I usually use their weedies but they have pointers as well.
I've been really happy with their weedies - spin out resistant and point well enough for me.
I tried to paste a link but it won't work..??
Carbon fins bend just us much as G10 but if you hold the tip of a carbon fin and twist it,there is much less twist than a G10 fin.
How does this help? Not sure, just passing on what i have heard.
hmm PB 48 cm slalom fin ...
not sure i have seen one
is freerace close enough ??
Makani Kohola from Makani or windspirit
if you tell Makani that joe windsurfer sent you - you may get free shipping :-)
and they will answer your questions too
I would think if carbon was layered up the same as G10 it would be the same weight , a lot stiffer but weaker in snap strength ???
How this relates to fin construction , I'm still working on.
What I've seen is carbon fins use a sand witch kind of construction . ( either a soft light foam or non structural hard core ) .
G10 is solid so it's hard to compare.
I have a Curtis carbon fin that is sooo light it has to be hollow.
Makani don't seem to want to answer my emails so giving up on them.
Really like the look of the Drake Slalom sr6b 50cm but having no luck finding one anywhere.
There seems to be one thing in common for all windsurfing brands, and that is inability to answer emails.
That's the magic email address! Although telling me to order it online doesn't help much as all I get is this
