Sorry to hijack thread Amanda..

no worries! if you have learnt half as much as I have from everyone here I am sure you are stoked!

I went out on sunday and while i did a much better job with the sail, I still think i could use a bit more downhaul to let the sail twist at the top more, so I will try this next time. Also - using the old spanner works an absolute treat! I had no problem getting max downhaul on the sail with this - but next time I think i will add a bit more length on the mast extension to get even more.

Thanks again to everyone for your help so far! Very much appreciated. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you when i am skilled up enough to hit the beach and not the lake!

Cheers,
Amanda

Just be careful with that spanner is all. Imagine what might go wrong.
I use the hook on my harness. I'd never use a spanner or other sharp, pointy instrument.

Get yourself one of these and then down hauling will not be an issue!

Hi Amanda, good to hear that you have it under control now.
With that sail and mast combination, I wouldn't expect a setting with a lot of slack at the top of the leech to be the optimum setting.

On the photo of the Naish sail, you can see that there is only a small amount of slackness at the leech above the top batten.
There is a wrinkle from the outer end of the middle batten that shouldn't be there, but it is pointing towards the top of the too-stiff section of the mast. Above that the mast is too flexible, so that's why there is a little bit of slack above the top batten.
Even with only a tiny bit of slack above the top batten, I consider putting on more downhaul would have made the sail worse.

I don't think you should take the likes of the EZZY sail video as a guide as how to set your sail/mast combination. That sail is set on the ideal EZZY mast. It will take an experienced eye to decide how much downhaul is enough and not too much for your sail/mast combination.

As evlPanda said, it would be best to replace the spanner - maybe with a bit of round wood about an inch in diameter and a foot long, to be more comfortable on the hands.

You can see that there is no visible slack in the leech of this sail at 10 minutes into this video. So some stiff top sails work without any visible slack, when set on the correct mast.
