I'm looking at simmer sails and was hoping i could get some comments and feedback.
i'm interested in comparing of the apex with the icon and the vmax with the enduro.
thx
I have started using the simmer race sails, the quality, the finish are great. Light and strong, love them.
It all depends on what size sails, conditions and what you want from a sail. I recently got a 5.9 and 5.4 enduro as cross over sails for medium wind foiling and bay blasting bump and jump conditions for which they have worked really well. The apex looks very similar and probably has a slightly higher cut in the foot as it is a wave sail. If you are looking at smaller sizes the icon would be great for onshore bump and jump and a great allround wave sail. At the other end of the spectrum if you are looking at the v max you should also consider the 2XC. I have these for foiling from 6.5 to 7.8. The 6.5 is probably my most used sail this season as it is also great to throw on a slalom board for a lazy after work blast rather than a full on session with the race sails.
Hope this helps a bit.
thanks guys for the comments.
i had a look at an new apex and used icon yesterday. but only saw the icon rigged.
i'm still swinging either way with the vmax and enduro. Am looking at 7+ size for flat water in light winds.
the other sails like the apex/icon/blacktip would be bump and jump and then pure wave in the smaller sizes.
how are you guys finding mast compatibility. everyone i know using simmer tells me they work on all constant curve masts. powerex, ka , unifibre etc.
At 7+ and flat conditions go the v max. It will give more stability than the enduru and be faster. I would still highly recommend the 2XC. Light, fast and stable and rotate so easy. I rig my 7.8 on a 460 ezzy rdm and it rigs perfectly and have rigged the 6.5 on a tushy 430 sdm with no issues.
Hi Gestalt
Yes all the Simmer Style sails are all Constant Curve.
They have been for many years and will continue to be.
All Simmer mast is constant curve (no big surprise :) )
The good thing is that you can use older Simmer masts just as fine in new sails / or newer mast in older Simmer sails..
Keep it simple :)
For the sails and what I can understand you are after, then like Roger all ready mentioned. Then for the bigger sails the Vmax is the go. (from 6.6 and up).
Enduro is a mix between wave and freeride. I used my 5.9 yesterday for a blast and they are amazingly fast / stable and lots of fun.
If you are 'just'doing Jump and Bump then consider following options.
5.4, 5.9, 6.5
If you want the full wave style sails in the smaller sizes , then Blacktip or Icon.
Icon is closer to the Enduro style sail and blacktip is the 4 batten powersail
Hope the above helped a bit.
Im using rdm cams in my SCR sails morts. 6.3 and down to 5.4 haven't tried in the 7 but should be ok. Jesper has the rdm cams unless i got them all.
Simmer is finally getting some recognition in WA now. I see them everywhere. 15 years ago when I moved here, there were none. Its been a good push from passionate people.
so today i picked up a 6.2m 2018 apex and rdm10 mast plus carbon extension.
Went straight to the beach but the wind died.... lol. i went with the apex over the enduro because of the xlpy and the wave focus for when i occasionally take it in the surf.
my previous 6.4m bump and jump sail i always wished had a little more wave bias so i could throw it around more. so in the case of the simmers i went for the apex over the enduro.
i rigged it when i got home, it rigs very easily. the mast slips in and out no problems. huge draft too. looks very powerful. i really like the shape and graphics. i can't wait to give it a run.
next will be a 7.2m Vmax
Hi Alastair
Great to hear you are on the Simmer Sails. :)
You will be blown away with how easy and fast they are to use.
For the RDM cambers. Yes they are the same spec as the KA ones.
So no problem to use your old RDM cams for the Simmer.
i'm switching from KA to simmer as well.
i'll look to replace a 5.3 kaos soonish. it's probably my favourite ka sail. i think it's around 2010 era. it's light and powers on and off very smoothly and has a great shape. i'm not sure i really want to sell it.
looking at the simmer wave sails the 5.6m blacktip will rig on the 430 mast i just bought. if i get an icon i'll need to use a 400 mast for the 5.6m. i've got a CC mast but would prefer a one mast quiver if i can because of travel so i'm leaning towards the blacktip.
i'm keen to hear any comparisons between the icon and blacktip 5.6m size
second session on the apex 6.2m today.
have now ordered a 7.2m Vmax and 5.6m blacktip..... that will give me from 7.2m to 5.6m on one mast a 430 rdm. great stuff.
I loved my old Icon... regret selling it. One of the more powerful wave sails I've had but it always felt... 'relaxed'
Photo of the Apex , the upper sail is in the sun, can't see it properly. My guess is a little 1cm , more downhaul.
if that's what your asking.
i had a 5.0 Icon, it felt it was a nice combination of power and release. Not sure, what Simmer calls it but to me a power wave. It did have 5 battens, in that size I'm into 4 .
