Hello,

Has anyone used a wave sail brand/model similar to Severne Blade? Gaastra ? I would be using sizes down from a 2018 Blade.

Thanks !

If you want to use smaller than a 2018, definitely go Gaastra as they don't make anything bigger then 2000

It's not clear what you mean. Maybe you should rephrase your query.

The Blade is a 5 batten control oriented wave sail. I don't think Gaastra has one.

Without searching , the Ezzy Zeta would be contenders ,and Force 5, both to me are more power wave sails.

i heard a rumor that Gaastra were testing a prototype 2002m .

Sorry gang, a bit low in the tank when I posted. I am looking for a similar feeling sail as a next size down from a Severne 2018 Blade 5.0. Eager to hear of anyone's experience with another brand used in their quiver , say a 4.5 ish size.
Thanks !

If you like the way Blades feel, get another Blade of similar vintage (they were very different before the 2017 model year).

Maybe check out the Point-7 Spy. It's a 5 batten power wave sail that's come out exceptionally well in all tests and is well priced.
I've used one in a 4.5 and it was very fast and stable.

Thanks for the replies thus far. I have 430 and 400 Severne g2s. The 2018 5.0 is a beautifully handling sail. Next size down is a 2013 4.5 Blade that I can't seem to get right. I've tried the NoLimitz hard top mixed length solution on the 4.5 without much success. (430 Sumo top 370 Reg bottom.). I weigh 90 kgs at 6'4". I also have NL 430 and 400

Faff , care to elaborate on the improvements post 17 models ?

Bespoke Sam, thanks for the suggestion. I'm in the US and don't think they are available here.

The NoLimitz mast is a good choice, however you'll get better results if you stay with the SUMO rather than mixing sections with the softer Skinny.
Have you seen the Sailworks REVO (Revolution) performance is similar to your Blade - only better !!

^^^^ Good point.....

(nice to see its a real person too )

EDIT oops no, seems the older 4.5 is a 404luff and recommended for a 400 mast

What year are the masts? AFAIK 2013 is when Severne switched to CC (without telling anyone). They were really HT before. Now they are CC (slightly towards the HT end).

It was a while ago, but I briefly had a 2013 3.7 Blade. Other Blades I've had - 2017 3.7/4.2/4.7/5.3, 2017 5.0 Pro. I don't really wave sail, mainly bump and jump. The 2013 felt like a small locked-in freeride sail with a deep, stiff sail draft. The 2017s felt way softer, flatter, with the dacron strip next to the luff sleeve allowing the sail to easily go flat or billow out. I believe the 2018/2019 Blades follow the same design program. They are very different to older Blades. The Pro Blades are very different again. The 5.0 Pro I had pulled like a truck. Too much for my 70 kg (I've moved onto 4-batten sails since).

I'd like to recommend the Sailworks Revolution Sails to you as an alternative to the Serverne Blade if that's what you're after. I've been using them for 4 seasons now and I have had a great experience with them. It has been perfect for me in onshore wave riding and bump n jump sailing. Its 5 battons give the Revo heaps of stability with lots of low down power making it a joy to sail in higher winds. Their range consists of 12 sizes from 3.0 up to 6.2. Their first year of production was 1994, so a proven model to test the time. The ideal mast is a RDM NoLimitz Sumo constant curve but you can also use a SDM mast.
Hope this helps, cheers Kai.

At my 90kg I used to run a 4.2 blade on a 400 gorrilla and 400 sumo nil issues for me. I tried a sumo top and bottom combo of a 370 430 on my 5.0 blade it was awful.
Maybe you just got a badly cut or sown sail or is had a bad repair not lined up right. Get rid of it and buy another 4.5 Blade.

^^ Yup
strangely enough, the manufacturers mast works. and playing with combos may or may not be good.

So to the OP - do you want similar feel..... or work on same mast and feel similar?
Very different questions...

If you want similar feel, the NP Combat up to about 2015 is near enough in feel to Blades...... but needs different masts of course
If you have SV masts, just go buy a Blade.
Or are you saying you just can't get Blades there?
More info required....

BTW, when I got the 2017 Blades, I had an old nolimitz skinny 400 (10 years old?) Worked fine with 4.7/5.3. Could not get the 4.2 to rig properly.

Mark, trying to avoid buying another mast hence the original garbled post :). Quick look at the spec has the 4.5 at 403 luff length. Perhaps it will take the 400, tho Severne recommends the 370.. Faff, I'll keep a lookout for a 2017.
Kai, I agree the Revos are beautiful sails. I've owned them in the past. I will consider them

Currently the vendors in the US only have the 4.2, 4.7, Blade available. No RRD or Point 7 sail presence that I'm aware of

Again, thanks to all for your time and guidance. I appreciate it.

The 4.5 with that luff length shows rec mast 400, then another year it says 370/400. Either should work and the feel will be a little different but I'd not say its a drastic change that would make one hate the sail. Sometimes the boom measurement changes a lot with different mast length so keep fiddling.....

Never had the 2013 blade but used extensively the 2012 and 2014 in a 4.5 fantastic sails with great top end control always had to rig them atleast 2cm more than the specs as standard.
Prefered the 2014 to the 2012 but also to the 2017 in that size which seems more grunty.
