Just a question for the brains trust.

I have noticed that while windsurfing that once I get to around 20+ knots that I hear a whistle. I thought it was from the sail/boom. I've spoken to others & they don't get this noise & reckon it could be from the fin???

Does anyone else get this/have any idea what causes this?

On the old Chinook mast extensions, there were holes along the extension. The older sails didn't have mast pads or the sail sleeve wouldn't meet up even with the tack of the sail, there for exposing extra holes of the mast extension that were outside the mast to the wind, and there was the whistle. Sounded like someone was playing the flute. Don't know if that's where you're whistle is coming from.

Boom extension will whistle if the foam falls out. Sorta annoying sorta fun, let's you know when it's really windy.

MalJ. I've had both the boom whistle and the fin whistle faults. The fin whistling occurred with some fins. I'm not sure the cause. I guessing cavitation ?? and this energy emitted from the board as sound.

I have a North Platinum slalom boom at it whistles like crazy from the holes for the extension clips. Big design fault I reckon. I have noticed the same issue with later models of the same boom, you can hear them a long long way off on the water. Perhaps it's an intentional safety design feature.

Fins can whistle. If they've left the trailing edge square.

I've also had rigs that whistle.

How can whistling coming from extension, boom, or fin be a "fault"? You're windsurfing, taking a sailing craft out in 20-30kt winds. There will be noise, sometimes a lot.

I have a North boom - I reckon that's the source.

I get it on bigger gear and seems to be with fins over 45-50cm. It sounds similar to the noise the foils make on the AC boats. I always just assumed it was the fin

Most probably it's the fin, just lightly sand the trailing edge and it will fix it . You need to do a couple of passes on the trailing edge, but perpendicular to the fin, you don't want to sharpen the edge, but make it a bit more 'square'

in the past I have had Select fins whistle
at first it seems like fun, but the pitch can become annoying
they should have chosen a different note
i agree with powersloshin to sand the TE/trailing edge
however, i used to sand ONLY one side of trailing edge and the song is gone

Dear Friend,
I have the same whistle problem in my sail. In my sail, whistle comes from the batten tensioners. At high speed batten tensioners acts like police whistle. I hope this explanation helps you. Good luck...

Not sure what your fun looks like but I had the same issue when I sanded the sharp trailing edge off my weed fin... sand the trailing edge so that it isn't as blunt and am fairly certain noise will go away

Sanding should stop it. I have never had a single fin humm or whistle.
The holes in EXT , will do this.

The real reason they hum or whistle is they don't know the words to the song.

Actually a bit more dull, "square" can make it worse.
The fin can whistle also if it's crooked, twisted (if a molded fin), the box (for a single fin) is not pointed straight ahead or slanted, or the fin was poorly foiled to begin with.
But I've never considered it a whistle, more of a buzz, surfboards can have the same problem, been there.

Good one. It's just you can hear anyone with one of these booms from 100 metres away, no collisions.

Hope the whistle won't attract any sharks. Never thought about that when my rig was whistling.

My North platinum carbon boom whistles even when on the beach rigging and derigging (if the wind is sufficient)...I'm now trying to learn the right fingering over the holes so I can entertain everybody with a tune or two.

I tried a new fin and it whistled really loudly. I found it quite amusing as i was on my big kit. I think of the 75wide board as a freight train or cargo carrier so I could just imagine it tearing down the track with it's warning whistle..
