Hi guys,

About to buy a GT31 and I am after your opinion on the best waterproof bag for them. Not only obviously waterproofing but comfort on arm etc etc. Any suggestions most appreciated as Ive seen there are a fair few being used.

Thanks your your assitance.

Yeah the Pacaqua midi is quite good. I've had one for a couple of years and its still going strong. I bought mine from Whitworths. They sell online.

The only problem I've had is when stacking and the velcro coming loose around my arm, with the pack and the GPS floating off. I think some people secure the pack with some electrical tape to secure the pack.

I pinched a big safety pin from my wifes sewing box and put it through both halves of the strap to keep it together.

Only problem I have had with the paqua (maybe also a problem with other brands) is its nearly impossible to use the little GT31 joystick. I think someone posted once something about using a lego wheel to fix it? Would appreciate it if anyone has tips on that.

cheers

I use the rubber washer from a roofing screw, the hole is conical but a tad small, you just have to ream it out slightly, so it fits over the joystick. It then won't come off and get lost, but allows full use of the stick without accidentally pressing in.

And agree the paqua midi is the best I've used. I have a cord tied at the top of the pack and looped around my arm, with a tightening toggle.
I've never had the velcro come loose, my only criticism is the length of the strap, I'm tempted to cut about 5cm off mine.

I can also recommend Kato's homemade cases which are very robust and waterproof. Pretty sure he has posted photos of them here in the past. Send him a PM and he'd arrange posting you one I'm sure.

The Paqua midi seems the best value option.

GPS vertical measurement is quite poor compared to lateral measurements. If you plot your tracks in 3D on dead flat water (behind a sand bar for example) it is not uncommon to see the altitude vary from + to minus 9 metres from sea level.

I suspect that you want to stop the joystick from changing the display mode whilst you're on the water. Example: you want the "speed genie" to stay displayed.

Are you aware that you can software-lock the joystick? To do this, hold the joystick down for about 3 seconds. "Key locked" will be displayed. Lock the joystick after you've brought up the display you want.

To unlock, same process.

This also works on a GT11 if you've updated the firmware.

As for EB's original question, I use one of JP747's H2OTek packs, and am very happy with that.
