Hi All,

The GPSTC has recently approved the Garmin 255 for use. I have a Garmin 965 which is currently the highest feature/cost version in the same series as the 255 (Foreunner) and has the same GPS chipset and probably similar processing software. The GPSTC wants some sessions comparing the 965 to a Motion or similar to assess it for approval for use in the GPSTC but I have no approved device to test against. Is anyone in Sydney able to loan me a unit for a short period to do such tests?

For those interested, the 965 is much higher cost than the 255, and I use it as my daily watch since it was released over a year ago (well before there was any talk of any Garmin model being approved). For me the large OLED screen is worth the cost. I do a lot of swimming for fitness in an indoor pool, and the bright/large OLED screen is much easier to read (than my older Garmin Vivoactive) while swimming and for normal use. For GPSTC only use, the 255 is a cheaper entry and I would recommend that over the 965, but the 965 is great if using as your main watch.

Cheers!

As part of your testing, may I suggest testing on a wet wetsuit sleeve and evaluate results both with software (eg GPS Speed Reader / Results) and KA72.

Hi Remery,

That might be difficult as I don't sail with a long sleeve wetsuit as I am a nice weather sailor. I do have one that I used last probably more than years ago and I probably don't fit it anymore! Could this be simulated in some other way.

Also I can't gaurantee I could test on water unless conditions cooperate with my time available to sail. The testing I do may be off the water (car roofrack). I have sailed twice in the last week, as luckily the wind has come on a weekend... but not looking good for the next couple of weeks.

Perhaps worth clarifying the pairings of Forerunner models in recent years:

- 245 + 945 released together in 2019 (Sony GNSS)
- 255 + 955 released together in 2022 (Airoha GNSS)
- 265 + 965 released together in 2023 (Airoha GNSS)

There are of course occasional entry-level models - e.g. 45, 55, and 165.

The 275 + 975 are due to be released in 2025, just a few months time.

It would also be good to collect some FR 965 timing data by using a custom version of APPro.

Can you perhaps send me a PM with your e-mail address?

TIA, Mike
