Hi Guys
it's on again, BURRUM WINDFEST 2013!!
big news for this year is the event will now be held over a full week. running from march 9th-15th.
the format will remain similar to previous years, so bring your speed kit, your sups, the fishing rods and most importantly your family and friends.
For those new to the event the format involves gps speed sailing along 1 of two prime locations. the first being a 4.5km sand bank and the second a 2.5km bank. the setup is a sight to behold and allows us flexibility with prevailing wind patterns during the event.
the event is geared towards both serious speed competitors and funsters plus their families. during the day we make the most of what's at hand. if it's windy then we open the course. each competitor at the end of the day lodges their gps data with the race officials to allow tallying of results within respective classes. classes, like previous years will include, masters, womens, youth and gps champ with prizes and giveaways for all lucky competitors. Burrum is the best speed sailing location in qld and has previously held the Australian gps nautical mile speed record
for those times when it's not so windy, we enjoy the social side of windsurfing with lessons for beginner, sup races, bbq's or just lazing in the sun and sharing a beer with the rods in the water.
continuing on the traditions of previous years 2013 will include the end of event bbq at the burrum sands as well as the mid event catchup at the burrum hotel.
entrance fees this year have increased slightly to take into account the additional days of competition and the need for additional rescue craft to facilitate this. to help reduce the costs this year we are providing a discount for competitors who chose to sign on early. details can be found on the windwanderers site from the link dylan kindly posted above.
this year dylan has greatly improved the registration process by creating an online payments process. (thanks dylan).
The Burrum Sands Holiday Units will once again be event HQ as well as event sponsors. the location of Burrum Sands overlooking the course and proximity to the water makes it the ideal place to stage the event. It is also the location of the end of event bbq and presentation ceremony. during the event a blackboard will be placed at the beach steps to the burrum sands to help keep everyone informed of weather conditions and event outlines.
accommodation can be found at

there is a multitude of accommodation to rent from houses to units to tents spaces.
Burrum Heads is a picturesque qld beachfront town. it centres it's lifestyle around the connection with the water. it's quiet and perfect for a windsurfing based holiday.
for those not windsurfing literate, Hervey Bay is only 30mins south, ideal for a daytrip. hervey bay has shops, waterpark, restaurants and hotels plus has access to fraser island and surrounds.

further event details will be advertised over the following 4 weeks, including full prize/giveaway pool, event sponsors and event details.
each year the event sees between 60-70 family and friends return to burrum heads for the event. i look forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones.
best regards
Justin.
Bloody Hell Bob, do you have to beat me at everything ! At least I'm in to keep you honest in the bench racing buddy !
so guys, a quick update.
i can now confirm that the neil pryde, JP trailer will be attending this years event!!!!!!!
that is fantastic news as everyone that knows the trailer will agree.
at last years event the trailer was in use every day. it contains jp sups, rs ones, jp freeride, slalom and wave boards and a full array of neil pryde rigs, and, it's there for all to take advantage of. the rs ones were used to explore the area and the sups got everyone including family and friends out on the water.
so....sup races will be on again!!!
big thanks to neil pryde jp australia and the team at surf fx for access to the trailer.
The family and I were just looking at coming down for the weekend, can I still race or is that just for the people who compete for the week?
hi lee,
you can enter the event and compete on any days you choose. you just need to remember to be there early enough for briefing on the days you can make it.
i encourage you to come along. great spot.

did anyone go to burrum????
currently 25-35 knots along the northern run judging by the bundaberg station.
so probably a little higher than that.
did anyone go to burrum????
Don't think so Gestalt. I think the direction would not have been ideal with east in it?
Anyway looks like it was an awesome day for Qld Speed sailing today at Wello. CONGRATS to all that got PBs today and to anyone who was brave enough to be out there, it was mad with 40 plus knots! No flat water at my local so gave it a miss today. Almost scored a PB yesterday though. Bring on the wind for Burrum
Northern bank should have been perfect for easterly. Not sure about tide with the surge and wave height tho. Have not heard a word from the hervey bay crew. Hope all is ok. Power out here now
Hi Jas,
have been trying to get onto brooke at the burrum sands for a few days now and got through today.
burrum got hit hard by the tornado that went through. it cleared a path 10km inland. the main damage seems to be isolated to the lions park end of town. houses were demolished. the caravan park was left in a very bad way. the trees at that end of town are no longer, have been snapped and thrown through houses. a couple sheds were blown 2-3 blocks away. (i guess no more cockatoo noises at dawn and dusk)
the town had no phones and was isolated by flood waters for a few days. some of the boats in the river just dissapeared and others were sunk.
currently there are volunteers, the locals and i think some army people in town tidying everything up. brooke is going to do before and after photos.
from my understanding houses and buildings south of the foodworks were relatively unscathed. i guess where a lot of the rental properties are. some minor water damage from gutters failing etc has occured but generally not to bad for those residents.
at this stage the event will definitley go ahead.
i would check bookings just to make sure they are open for business.
i am sure the locals will appreciate the business. they have all helped a lot with the event over the years and a lot of them are staring in the face of no income for a month or more as holidays have been cancelled etc.

How many hours drive from Brisbane?
What are the best forecasts for Burrum?
What are the major airports near burrum other than Brisbane?
Hi Hardie
Burrum is about 3.5 hrs drive north of Brisbane. I'm on the Sunshine Coast and its about 2.5hrs drive from here. Probably only just over 2 hrs from the Sunshine Coast airport and only 1/2hr from Hervey Bay airport.
Check BOM Southern qld waters which then includes Hervey Bay, or Windguru and spot search Burrum Heads. Best direction is SSE or SE or ESE, all of which we have been getting for the last week, so weather patterns are looking good and what we start to expect this time of year.
it's a great event hope you can make it.
Cheers
Kellie
PS Darryl you beat me too it. I guess 4hrs north of Brisbane taking it real easy.
If not this year then next year I wanna do Burrum, this year if it happens will be on the spur of the moment, i will have to see whether perth has direct flights to Hervey bay (i doubt it)
DEsperately wanna get there but may have left it too late this year, checked the week out in my diary and already have 15 people booked for that week, may be a last minute call for 3 or 4days over a weekend, but my chances are low I wanna do Burrum, FNQ, and visit the Brisbane spots. It will happen, just when is unknown?
